| I just got back from my local Academy store and picked up one box of the new brass cased Barnaul .223. I know it to be good pistol ammo and ASSUME that the brass cased 223 will be okay??? I knew not to get the lacquered steel cased stuff, but how about this one? Any potential problems that you're aware of, and has anyone already tried it? $3.86/box is certainly better than $7.00/box for Winchester/Federal, but not at the expense of my AR15. Thanks! |

It's actually Monarch. Since the Monarch steel cased junk is made by Barnaul I assumed this was as well. If it's not then I need to find out who DOES make it. There's no "made by" on the box and that should have been my first clue. Thanks for the replies. It makes me feel a bit easier knowing that someone else has tried it and not had any problems. |
It is made by Prvi Partisan - Serbia - same maker as Wolf M193. The case headstamp is "nny" which is PPU in cyrillic. There have been several threads on it.... seems to be decent plinking ammo, albeit slightly underpowered. It ran great in a couple of my weapons, but not at all in my 20" rifle. It is NOT barnaul. The steel cased Monarch is barnaul.... but not everything with the Monarch name is russian import. |
| Thank you all for the help and input. So, seeing that this stuff is brass cased like Winchester/Federal, etc., could you see any benefit in using the higher priced ammo for just plinking? I don't know, but for $3.86/box that's almost too good to be true. It SHOULD be non-corrosive like the rest, shouldn't it? |
Unless you reload, or find this is a LOT more accurate than cheaper alternatives (Wolf .223) - for general plinking you should buy the *cheapest* reliable ammo you can find. This ammo is non-corrsoive. Any new production ammo will be. |
Again - Monarch and Barnaul are not interchangeable. That isnt "crappy" steel cases - but that is Barnaul lacquered steel cases. That's good ammo for plinking. At $143/K, it is much cheaper than brass cased alternatives. |
That's because there are two kinds of Monarch .223 at Academy. If I recall correctly, the steel-cased ammo is $2.86 (square blue box), and the brass-cased ammo is $3.86 (long green box). I recently bought Wolf ammo for $2.76 per box (tax included) at the gun show.

This is exactly what I saw in Academy this past weekend.... Monarch is Academy's Private Label.... I bought the Greenbox Monarch which is brass cased and has the "nny" headstamp for $3.86 ea.... it said "Made in Serbia for Sell, Inc". I also bought a "garden gazebo" (a glorified tent) there. It was also "Monarch" brand and it said "Made in China for Sell, Inc." Have fun! |
