I have heard of people using motor oil on the seals.  Wouldn't that, in time, destroy the seals.  If anything I am thinking of using a product like I use on my cars window seals and rubber etc.  I use these products once a year when I put my cars up for winter storage.  What do you guys think of this idea for ammo can seals?  BTW there is no petroleum in these products.

We used to use silicone {ETA2} GREASE on diving helmet O rings so that they wouldn't get destroyed. It came in a small can.. like carmex or similar..

ETA:
Anyone know where to get replacement  seals for ammo cans?? never seen this addressed?

ETA2: like This
no wonder my post count sucks.....

The seals on your motor are rubber, same as an ammo can.

you could always use KY. you know it's safe for rubber.

It is water based, but im sure the amount of moisture that actually woudl be released would be minimal.

Go down to your local automotive parts store or hardware store and pick-up a tube of Dielectric Tune-Up Grease---it's made to be used on rubber products.

There is a great product called 303 protectant. It doesn't necessarly repel water but it will keep the rubber gasket like new.

I been using that "Armor-All" Rubber protector stuff and knock-offs, with the polymer do-jiggees in it. Keeps the rubber seal pliable.

Some guys use brake fluid, figuring if this stuff won't hurt rubber brake parts, it sure as hell won't hurt the rubber seal on the ammo can.

Go easy on any stuff you use--don't gob it on so it drips into the can!

About replacing the rubber seal: NAW! The daggone thing is fitted and then crimped in there.

Way too much fooling around for me when I can buy the whole .30 cal can for $2 or $3 apiece at Pat's Reloading, Massillon, Oh, where I pick em up and save shipping fees.
