I'm looking for a good SD/HD ammo, and went to Dallas Market Hall.  Collins Cartridge Company is selling some .223Rem ammo made by Winchester, but it came in 7.62x39 boxes, with Winchester labels over the 7.62x39, even though you could still see it.  It said Winchester .223Rem ZRA223S 69gr HP.  I talked to the owner, and he said Winchester ran out of Ranger boxes, and shipped them in relabeled boxes.  He was selling alot of Winchester Ranger for cheap, and this stuff was no exception at $9.50, or so.

What do you folks think?  Legitimate?  Is it even worth a damn as a defensive cartridge?

Thanks in advance.

I would have to say someone reloaded the rounds and put them in the new box.  I have never heard of any reputable ammo manufacture that reuses old ammo boxes.

Run away.

If i'm not mistaken there was a similar question posted a month or so back that asked roughly the same thing. Someone replied who had knowledge from a manufacturer standpoint and stated that there is a legal issue involved in selling ammo in mislabeled or stickered-over boxes, and that most manufacturers will not do that. Never heard of that myself either, I would stay away.

I'll stay away from that stuff, but he does have some Ranger 5.56 62gr M855, for like $8 a box that I'm thinking about snatching up.
