What's the best self defense round for close quarter combat from a 1:7 twist 14.5" M4?

At close range, almost any military-style 5.56 would be fine. See the ammo oracle.

Out of the ammo you can buy as a civilian it's the 75 gr. Hornady TAP or the 75 gr. Black Hills. Both loads use the same 75 gr. Hornady bullet, both are S.A.A.M.I. pressure loads.

M193.

and this would work out of a 1:7 twist? My main concern is with the faster twist rate. I never used a 1:7 Twist, I always staved true to the 1:9.
I read the oracle, but it wasn't clear about shooting the M193 out of a 1:7 twist

M193 is far from the best ammo to use for self defense. A large percentage of the ammo fails to fragment.  If a large percentage of pistol ammo failed to expand people would call it crap.  However this is AR15.com and everyone seems to worship M193 for some odd reason and call it the best defensive  ammo you can buy.  Get a 75 grain OTM rounjd from Hornady or Black Hills.

Why would you think you cant use 75 grain ammo from a 1/7 twist barrel?

DevL, he was talking about M193 in a 1in7.

Q. OK, that's complex.  Simple question: Can I fire M193 ammo in my 1:7 or 1:9 twist barrel?

Yes.

M193 is essentially a "universal" round; able to be stabilized by barrels with twists between 1:14 and 1:7.  Point of impact will change slightly compared to an M855 zero, so rezeroing is recommended.

I use and prefer 75gr TAP

Last I knew the good 75 TAP was LE purchase only.

I would go with mk262 seconds from Cabela's.

?? 75gr TAP is availabe at SAMMI pressures for civilians for some time.

Black Hills also makes a great loading with the same Hornady 75gr OTM.  Personally I purchase more of the Black Hills because it's readily available locally.

Dr. Roberts (DocGKR) has discussed this subject on TF (use the Search feature there), he has listed several loads that are top tier for 1:7 twist barrels (and no, M193 didn't make Tier 1 or Tier 2).  (http://www.tacticalforums.com/cgi-bin/tacticalubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=78;t=000864#000000)

the mk262 is what they advertise as the 77gr. 5.56 on that page?  "77 Grain MKCL"  50 rounds for $27.99??

Yep that's it. The 75 gr stuff has a better wound track though. Now if the MK262 used the 77 gr Nosler round it would be a different story.

Because everybody knows that MK262 with the 77 gr Nosler round is pretty much the best in 5.56. But your gonna have to load it yourself.
