230 grains of Gold Dot hollow point

900fps

414 Foot pounds of energy at 25 yards or less.

Anyone ever use a round like this before?

Check Winchester Ranger RA45TP
or even Double Tap .
I prefer the standard pressure RA45T (MV in the mid 800's out of my 5" pistols). Quicker follow up shots.

What? you mean there's something out there besides ball ammo?

I bought some Federal HST from Streichers - +P 230gr HP, and yesterday did my highly scientific 5-milk-and-laundry-soap-jugs-filled-with-water expansion test.

Result: 24 inches of explosive penetration, .856" expansion with surpisingly soft recoil from my Glock 30. I didn't chrony it, but around 920 fps is projected.

I searched around on other boards and found some guys getting expansion out to 1 inch in wet backs and water boxes.

I'm impressed, and carrying it.

Have you been hiding under a rock? The GDHP is a very popular choice along with the Winchester Rangers. The latter can be very hard to find, while the Gold Dots are pretty much everywhere. Speer lists the 230gr GDHP at 890 fps on their website, but I expect they'd expand reliably at lower velocities as well.

Gold Dot in that set up is the best.  I blieve on another forum, this was discussed, and Doc, "I believe" listed it as best among that class.

I like the 200gr. GDHP in +P.  IMO, the added velocity coupled with the lighter bullet should ensure expansion without sacrificing too much penetration (hell it's still 200 grains).

Unless things have changed in the last couple years the 200gr Gold Dot does not perform as well as its 230gr brother...  IIRC something about inconsistant and unreliable expansion when fired through clothing. Speer may have improved this bullet recently, but I'm not sure. The 230gr loading has been a good perfromer for a long time.

FWIW...
