i went in to pick up some 68gr to try out in the 1/9 16".  i was looking to pick up some BH 68 moly coated hp's.  the guy at the counter said moly coated bullets  would be bad for the gas tube.  how much truth to that is there?  anyone use moly coated ammo regularly? any disadvantages..?
thanks in advance,,

Search for moly and you will see lots of informaiton.  Seem to be two camps.  Some swear by it, some at it.  Claimed benefits include higher and more consistent velocity and easier clean up.  The opposing camp claim it is hygroscopic and traps moisture below the moly coat and can never be removed from the barrel.  Very little real science here.  Both camps seem to agree that if you use moly, use it exclusively.  I shoot both and don't really see much difference.  Armalite does recommend moly for the 100 round break in period for stainless barrles.  Other than stainless, most all agree just shoot it.  Good luck.

Anon,

As for being Hygroscopic, and the resulting byproduct being detrimental to both stainless and CM steels is well documented in certain industrys/Govt.

I agree with everything else you have stated.

I too farted around with the stuff, figuring the benefits might outweigh the detractions, given the scope of the matter.

In the end, the crap was just another variable to deal with.

Good tubes don't need Moly, Mouse milk, or Voodoo.

Like you said.

2 camps on the matter.

All the best!
