A couple of months ago while plinking away with my cousin at my ranch I decided to bring out my Colt match target comp for some practice. While I grabbed my shooting bag I noticed a dark (older not the new "green" stuff) box of PMC frangible ammo.  I asked my father where the hell he got it, he replied that he traded some guy at the office a box of my usual plinking ammo Winchester ranger power point for it. My uncle over heard and suggested I grab I piece of scrap pipe and fire at it with the frangible ammo. He said that he had used the stuff during training and it supposed to pretty much dissolve on impact. So I do as suggested and fire about ten rounds into the pipe at about 15 yards (with about 5 FTE's actually, I guess the stuffs underpowered as well)  to my surprise the thing's didnt turn into a white dust on impact infact it blistered the pipe and several bullets actually managed to penetrate the front face of it. Me and my cousin then got the bright idea of firing the Rangers into the pipe to compare the penetration. Well on the third Ranger two pieces of jacket came flying back one digging into my arm the other hitting my thigh with the impact of a very hard punch . But anyways The three rangers performed almost exactly like the PMC. So my question is, is this normal? Has anybody ever expiereinced something like this with PMC are any other frangible ammo for that matter.

It is my understanding that most frangible bullets are compressed copper dust formed under very high pressure and thus are very brittle...the brittleness is what makes them "dust" when hitting something hard like metal...Even when fired at hardened steel, frangible bullets can leave a mark...it's just less than a regular FMJ bullet...remember that velocity is over 3000 fps and pipe is not that thick, and not that hard, so I am not surprised at all to hear of your results. Frangible bullets definitly have their place, but they are not majic.

I've done it at 10 yards or a little less during training.  With the right steel, in can be safe.  I wouldn't recommend it.  With the frangable ammo, you shouldn't have to worry too much.  It should have turned to dust.

Could they have been reloads in a frangable box?

Its a possibility, but im pretty sure they were frangible. I remeber the bullets being silver colored and the were shaped in a different manner from those that I had shot before. The box said they were 40gr. But I did notice they were loaded into winchester brass. Does this sound like PMC ammo?
