i have a 16" m-4 profile i ordered form del-ton.  the barrel is stamped dti, chrome lined, 1-9. i have read the ammo oracle several times now.  now, i do not recall if the barrel was chambered for .223 or 5.56, but i am going to assume it is .223.  the other weekend, i shot some xm-193 through it.  ok, here is my question: am i going to blow myself up by shooting 5.56 ammo through a .223 chamber?

I would be shocked to learn of an AR barrel maker that was not using 5.56 chamber specs
unless someone ordered it special built that way in an M4 style.  In that case I'd expect it to be clearly
stamped on the barrel.  Yours is probably stamped as well, just under the
top handguard.   In an M4 profile barrel I can't imagine you have .223 but it's
certainly possible.

You should probably not shoot any more 5.56  until you know for sure, but the
barrel should be clearly marked.

The short answer is no, you will not have a problem with 5.56 in a .223 chamber. I have a 20" stainless target barrel with a .223 chamber and have fired close to 1k of 5.56 throught it without any pressure signs what so ever.

You will be fine with using 5.56.  The only .223 Rem. chambered AR barrels are custom orders and will be stamped as such.

Now some bolt actions...its all in the throat.

While this is not entirely true (there are many known exceptions), the vast majority of new ARs have 5.56 chambers.  Manufacturers have finally figured out that most AR owners will eventually feed their rifles 5.56 ammo, and chamber accordingly.  Special models such as match/target and varmint guns are definitely exceptions to this rule, though, as these guns were designed for .223 SAAMI-spec match ammo, and may well have extraction problems and other high-pressure issues when 5.56 is fired in them.
