I am contemplating buying some wolf 62gr fmj or hp bullets, i have never shot or even owned any wolf, but 62gr in MI is almost non existent. I see posts about new polymer coating that works great. My question is, what are the differences in the two and how can i identify them? Are the boxes marked differently, do the dullets or brass look different? I just don't want to go buy 1000 or more rounds of problem ammo. BTW, why not wolf, most people would say it's better for ak's than ar-15's? What kind of problems has anyone experienced???

There is nothing really wrong with any of the wolf that hasn't been exposed to water, solvents, extremes etc.I was leary of it at first. If you have a match gun or a tight chamber or headspace problem,or dirty gun you may not like it.It isn't a clean running powder in it.I maintain my weapon.I have shot 3gun matches for 2 years exclusively with it and done well.I have shot almost 10,000 rounds of wolf.I will continue.

Buy the Wolf from Sportsman's Guide, use the coupon linked in the price list.  Its the good, new polymer stuff.

After my SG member discount and the coupon I paid $103 for 1000 rds, shipped.

Unless it is really old, it should be the newer stuff.  Rememer if the casing looks green its bad, if it looks grey its good.  The polymer stuff really has a slippery surface to it due to the polymer coating.

The poly coated ammo has a very uniform medium gray color, if it looks any different from that it's not poly coated.

Thanks for the info.  I think I will buy some from Sportman's Guide.  Can't get much cheaper in .223 I believe.

BE ADVISED! AmmunitionStore.com, here in the "football hall of fame" city, Canton, OH,  is still just $99/1000!! Either 55gr or 62 gr FMJ. Call in an order for 10 or 20 cases. Drive on down--the hell with UPS/Fed Ex shipping. Michigan ain't that far. You will save.I did!

HMMM, $99 for a case from Ammostore and I burn $30 in gas to get there, or order from SG (like I have now WAY too many time )  Get it for about $100 a case and get it to my door in three days, boy, that's a toughie!

If you buy from an online source, you will almost certainly get the new stuff because they cycle through stock so fast. Local sources might be more questionable, but I rarely see the lacquer coated stuff around anymore.

I would go with FMJ for (theoretically, at least) increased feeding reliability. The HP is unlikely to expand because of the thick jacket and they are both teh suck as far as terminal ballistics goes, but it’s the shiznit for cheep plinking.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I picked up 1000 rds of the grey stuff last week and shot a whole bunch through my bushie and my Colt. I heated em' up real good and NO problems at all, and it shot good groups IMO. I had no trouble hitting skeet consitently at 200+ yds with my bushie!

I have shot both the 55 grain and 62 grain Wolf FMJ.  I find the 62 grain to be more accurate.
