What exactly does Steel Penetrator mean? This is where I get it from,    Federal XM855 223 Rem (5.56mm) Lake City SS109, 62 gr Green Tip Steel Penetrator, 2000 Rds. They are being sold at The new outdoor marksmen website but I dont quite know what it means.  Thanks.

M855 is a composite projectile.  Meaning it has the traditional lead core but also a steel penetrator inside the bullet.  This allows for better penetration since steel does not deform like lead does when a target is hit.  M193 contains only lead  .

Some good info here.

See the different colored front section in the interior of the bullet?

Thats the hardened steel core.  The rear section is lead.

AP ammo generally has a complete steel core.
