...besides m193? I need to know becuase I have a SP1 upper (1/12) and with the shortage of M193, I need to know what would be the most effective anit human round (SHTF). TIA |
| Aside from Q3131A (which will also be unavailable soon), I would say the best thing you can get is WWB .223 and PMP South African .223 (gazelle box). I know for a fact that the PMP fragments and I would ASSUME that the WWB .223 does as well. If there are better suggestions, Troy and others will be able to help. |

If you can't find any M193-spec ammo, then my next suggestion would be Winchester 55gr SP ammo. While it isn't as good as M193, and doesn't quite meet the 12" minimum penetration spec, it's close, and has a pretty good track record as a police duty load. If you can get it (and afford it), the Federal Tactical 55gr SP load (using the TBBC bullet) is great, but it's LEO only. You can get the unsealed, uncrimped version in the Federal Premium line. -Troy |

Thanks Troy. Out of curiosity, has any company loaded the Barnes 'X' bullet into a .223? I have read that the penetration of this type of bullet surpases what is to be expected based on bullet weight. Moreover, I have heard the expansion is decent. One more thing, so the Winchester rounds you reccomended are crimped? Or would bullet set back be a concern? TIA |
| I've just been using winchester 55gr. fmj leads ahead of 27 grs. H-335 inside a L.C. case with rem. 71/2 small rifle primers. I haven't had it cronied yet but it seems as hot as XM193. Anyone have chrony info on a similar load out of a 5.56 chambered AR? Supposedly it'll give 2250-2300f.p.s. out of a mini, which should be a little higher for an ar with a longer barrel and tighter rifling twist I imagine. |
