| What is the best personal defense round that I can use in my 9mm upper from RRA? |
|
Agree on the Ranger designs. Gold Dots in 147 are probably very reliable, too. As far as the Win 115grn Silvertips, that round got a serious black eye when it was the exact cartridge that failed to penetrate to the heart of the bad guy in the Miami, 1986 shootout. It penetrated through the guy's arm (mushrooming), then into his chest and through a lung, but stopped short of his heart by an inch. We actually have the Silvertip to thank for causing the FBI (and thus IWBA) to get the ball rolling on research into what really is required by handgun, shotgun, and rifle cartridges to injure and wound an attacker. I know of no knowledgeable terminal ballistics authority that suggests any 115 grain loads anymore. Too fast, too stubby, not enough sectional density. |
Testing from the Doc (at Tactical Forums) has revealed that MOST lighter weight rounds simply do not penetrate enough to reach vital organs; HOWEVER, there are SOME light weight rounds that WILL do the trick--but I don't know which ones off the top of my head. Here is some information that may help you decide what is best for you: www.tacticalforums.com/cgi-bin/tacticalubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=78;t=000287#000000 |
