A while back there was a thread where some members posted pics of their "ammo dumps". I am in the process of building mine. Can you guys post pics? I also want to know how many loaded mags you can fit in the ammo cans ( do you worry about the finish of the mags rubbing on the inside of the cans?) and where you guys buy dessicant. All your pics willl be greatly appreciated!

I'm not very organized in how I store ammo. I have several closets in my spare bedrooms that look like this:

I WANT WHAT TROY'S GOT!!!! WOW! What do these guys do for a living?...I have to save up for months, not to mention get permission from Congress (the wife) just to buy a 1000rds. I am bombarded by:

"Why do you need so much?"

"Just cuz those gun nuts on that website you're always on buy a ton, doesnt mean you have to!"

"Another rifle? You already have one just like it!"

Oh! The humanity............

Well I was pushing 20K rounds total in two calibers, but I've shot that down a bit.

I don't think ammo is becoming scarce, but ammo cans shure have been in my neck of the woods.  Has anyone else noticed the supply of the 'fat-50' cans drying up since the war?

As for dessicant, I use the silica-gel, purchased in bulk as the special kitty litter at Petco.  Then I just put it in any water transparent container.  I bought some paper card humidity indicators online and stick one in each can too, to know when to replace the kitty litter.

I have, er, more than one such shelf.  That shelving unit is actually 4 shelves high, though it isn't 100% filled.  The heaviest stuff is at the bottom, all in cans, in case the garage gets wet.  Stuff in cardboard cases goes on higher shelves.

Those particular brown cans are British .308 (Radway Green) that come in the 50-round "bricks/eggcrates".  It's mid-80s stuff that was common around '98-99.  Not too much of it left, but I bought a bunch of Australian to replace it.

Lots of those cans are M193 of some type (you can see "Fed XM193" on the white label on the two top right-hand cans), on strippers, in bandos, packed by myself.  A couple are Mk262.  Some are handloads.  I've got a few .30-caliber cans with 8mm & .303 on their two, as the shelf is just wide enough for 7 50-cal cans and 1 30-cal can.

When I was taking that picture, I was digging around for a can in the back, which is why the shelves weren't completely full.  I try to rotate my stock and occasionally reorganize.  I also handload, and I have a lot of handloaded pistol ammo, as well as a decent supply of handloaded match-quality rifle ammo.

Nice rack.  Looks like you need more cans.  I just picked up 40 cans at Ammunitionstore.com and filled 30 of them the other day. that about cleaned up all the boxed stuff here. Past the 150k mark a while ago.

Is that a fire rated safe(concrete lined walls and door) or just a big steel box?

Okay, I had to go make a count.  It was pitifully easy.

My "SHTF" stored ammo...

2 case card boxes with...
2 x stripper bandoleers = 280 rnds 5.56 Q3131A
25 mixed 12 gauge rounds
100 .45 APC
40 .38+P
250 .22LR

2 stripper clip bandoleers in my BOB

1 30cal ammo box with...
320rnds Q3131A boxed
100 rnds .45 APC
15 rnds mixed 12 gauge

2 600 rnd (milsurp) battle packs

thats 2Krnds 5.56, 300rnds .45, 100rnds .38, 500rnds .22LR, 65 12 gauge

Plus my stuff in the range bags etc

I feel small

Accumulating ammo is easy and takes no skill.  The bragging rights involved are thin indeed.

The 'ammo dump picture' thread, that's where I get to show off some -- but I don't get a feeling of accomplishment from a large grouping of ammo cans like I would from a small grouping of bullet holes.  In that realm, I'm small fish too.

I am simply..stunned. I am sure Troy and Brouhaha could take over a small, third world country!I buy my ammo cans on ebay..very good prices and shipping is quite reasonable! I have 2000 rds of XM193 in Brit Bandos. This is just to start! But does someone have a pic with an open can showing the way they pack loaded mags in the ammo cans?

Here is how I do my "baby cans".

Start with a little can, evidently I used this one for a camo scheme of some sort....

Load the ammo up on striper clips and place in carboard.......

Pack in the top layer, throw in some spoons, and you have 540 rounds all set and ready to go...

What I have found is nice with the little cans is that a half case (actually a tad over) is very easy to run around with.  Even smaller people can tote a small can around like this and not have it be a chore.  They stack easy, are pretty cheap, and are ready to load up on short notice.

The routine for setting up full cans isn't hard, but it has been covered a few times by other posters.

not paranoid.

just like anything else. guns, uppers, lowers, it gets addicting.

first you start out with a case of q3131a...

then its a case of xm193..

then you think....gee..it would look really cool if i had five cases of each.

then your hooked.

shooting is an expensive hobby.

40% of my ammo purchases have been based on current cost being so reasonable (my current fianancial situation allows a lot of disposable income), 30% based on the idea that ammo supplies may dwindle in the future, 20% based on the fact that I keep a supply of ammo out of state (in Texas) so I don't have to transport ammo when I travel, 10% the paranoid factor, might have a prolong shootout with zombies/terrorists.

I think I have so much  because of you psychos. Over 25k of assorted stuff, which pales in comparison to a lot of you. Maybe I'll take pictures when I get home this weekend, but I know I'll feel guilty when I think how much I've spent on my anti-zombie stockpile.

The Curio and Relics license sure has bloated my ammo supply and amount of calibers.
