I read this on the SKS Board...

Posted: Sun Dec 14, 2003 10:20 am    Post subject: cartridge feeding.........

One of the principle advantages of the 7.62 x 39 cartridge and its brothers and sisters is the excellent feeding it provides...kinda' like a tapered peg in funnel. Hence the "curved" magazines as the rounds stack that way.

The mechanism doesn't have to be as precise as say, the M16, etc. Conversely the feeding is much more reliable.

I doubt this very much. I had more mis-feeds with my Norinco vs Zero mis-feeds with my M4forgery shooting exclusively Wolf ammo.

I think we can agree that there is really no difference in feeding. It is all based on the the shooters habits and the environment that the shooter is in.

Feeding there will be little difference - however for extraction the taperd case is a big advantage.

Unless 5.56mm cartridges are tapered I've no clue why the 30 round magazines are curved or why the bottom edge of the 20 round mags isn't square with the ends.....

Almost ALL cartridges are tapered.  Some not a whole lot but even "straight walled" cases like .45ACP are actually tapered.

The taper on 7.62mm Soviet is .047"; the paper on 5.56mm is .018".  (On .45ACP it's a mere .003").

A large taper is a great advantage in extraction.  Olde Brit .303 has a .059" taper.

Is it common to have feeding problems with AR's? I've just bought my first AR  and the first 424 rounds have fed without incident. Non of my AK's or FAL's have any anoying habits but the FAL's have considerable recoil and the AK's aren't very consistant. My new Oly arms carbine is amazingly accurate, at least with this case of Winchester ammo. I've ordered another flat top carbine and now to accessorize until I go broke.

No, and whey you do it usually one of two things:
1) Bad magazine

2) Mag Catch needs to be tightened a bit.

both fixes are quick and simple.
