I found a place with great prices on pulled 54gr red-tip tracer bullets. These are bullets only & I was concerned if anything special (powder, primer, etc.) was required to load them.

Will they ignite & perform correctly with my off the shelf components?

Thx,
HS

This comes up every other week at subguns.com reloading discussion. The general opinion is use IMR-4895. Military uses W844, I have used Varget for lighting 308 orange tips in 30-06. I think otheres have used Varget for M196 tracer. Regular components are fine.

I bought a can of IMR 4064 (Stick I think)powder. I have found that ball powder is better for ARs but it goes bang(it works). Will this work with the tracers? I saw in the links you posted that some people said some powders didnt work. I lean towards the minimum loads because I shoot IPSC 3-gun with it and the bullet only has to go about 3-70 feet so range isnt a biggie. It only has to cycle the bolt and go bang. Will minimum loads work or do I need max loads.

I loaded some with Win 748 and have had ignition problems. I'm not sure if it's the powder or if the projectiles have reached the end of their shelf life. These are the red tips.
