HAS ANYONE OF YOU AR GUYS USED THE STONEY POINT BULLET DEPTH MEASURING TOOL(OAL)(OVER ALL LENGHT)WHICH ENABLES YOU TO KNOW HOW MUCH DISTANCE YOU HAVE BETWEEN THE PROJECTILE AND LAND AND GROOVES IN YOURE RIFLES CHAMBER,STONEY POINT CLAIMS THAT YOU WILL INCREASE ACCURACY WITH YOURE RELOADS WHEN YOURE BULLET DEPTH IS SET FOR YOURE RIFLES SPECS. I PURCHASED THIS TOOL AND HAVE MEASURED THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE BULLET IM GOING TO BE USING IN MY RELOADS(68gr match hornandy)AND FOUND OUT THAT THE DISTANCE IN ANY OF MY AR UPPERS IS A FAR CRY FROM STANDERED BULLET DEPTHS. IF I DO SET MY RELOADS AT THIS BULLET DEPTH,THE BULLETS WILL BE PROTRUDING OUT FROM THE CASE MORE THAN NORMAL,SO MUCH SO,THAT I WILL HAVE TO FEED EVERY RD ONE AT A TIME BECAUSE OF THE OAL OF THE ROUND BEING TO LONG FOR THE MAGAZINE. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT THIS WILL AID IN ACCURACY,BUT I SHURE WOULD LIKE TO TALK TO SOMEONE WHO HAS USED THIS METHOD BEFORE I RELOAD MY RDS. THANKS ( BOTH EYES OPEN) |

Ed, Your first priority for accuracy should be to determine what type of bullet your rifle likes, (this will depend on brand, barrel type, twist and length). Most beginning AR shooters and reloaders stick with mag length rounds for the weight of bullets your loading. Single loading of heavy 223 bullet in the 75 grn, 80grn and 90grn weights are used by HighPower shooters to gain an advantage at the 600 yard line, (lot of guys like the 75grn for 300 too). Ya didn't mention what barrel twist your rifle is or for that matter the length, (assuming 20"), so.... If you intend on this, (long-loading), suggest ya try the 75grn A-MAX Hornady bullets first (as these bullets are known to produce the best accuracy loaded close to the lands, but like the heavier rounds prefer 1/8 twist) and if your gonna shoot the 80s or 90s be sure that you have the proper barrel twist to shoot these rounds, (1/8 or tighter). If you do intend to reload the 68s suggest ya stick to the longest OAL your mags will allow as these will more than likely be good enough to get ya out to the 300 yard line with whatever accuracy your rifle is capable of using this Hornady round. FWIW, I and others have had fairly good results w/ Sierras 77 grn. MatchKing bullets, as they are a bullet that is noted for it's mag length accuracy, (this bullet as opposed to the Hornady 75grn A-MAX, likes to jump and will shoot in 20" 1/8 twist rifles). I have had good luck w/ them in my 24" 1/9 twist "F" class rifle at 600 yards, but all the best HP Service rifle shooters are throwin the heavier 80s and 90s from that distance and are definately shooting tighter twist barrels. Again I'm guessing alot here at what your rifle length is and your barrel twist rate, so adding this info will help others help ya better. Hope this helps get ya started and remember the more info you include about the type of rifle and your intentions with it, the better info ya will get in return. Mike PS - BTW, Stoney Points claim of getting better accuracy by placing your bullets in closer proximity to the lands of your barrels refers mainly to bolt rifles. Long loading ARs is predominately a HP thing and far too rare for Stoney to comment on in general terms like that, even though they are used by HP shooters for that exact purpose. |

Mr wilson Got a 24" S.S. bull/1/8 (wilson) Ive loaded 68gr match before with good results, but Im going longer range (300). Im going to load my reloads using the Stoney oal tool and shoot both reloads (before and after the use of the oal) I was hoping to find someone who has used the oal tool in AR,s. Im shure Ill be the first to find out if in fact I do have an advantage using this oal tool Thanks for the advise (LIVE LONG AND SHOOT WELL) |
