How do you recommend storing ammo? It will be inside so weather is not a factor.I hope to put it in ammo cans.Do you store some in loaded mags? If so how much? Would you store it in the boxes or loose in the can?

There is no certain one way in which you can store ammo but there does seem to be two popular methods used by people here.

The first is simply placing boxes in an ammo can. I buy Winchester Q3131A in quantity and I can get 900 rounds in a .50 cal ammo can. Check the can to make sure it is in good condition, paying particular attention to the seal. Then place in your ammo and toss in a pack of dessicant for good measure. Then just find a nice, cool place to store the cans.

Another method is storing the ammo on strippers inside bandoleers. A .50 cal ammo can will hold so many of these and the ammo is ready to go in this state.

The military uses both of the above methods for storage. You can also store loaded mags in the same manner and some people do this. But I really see no need for having every mag you have loaded in storage. I keep out a few hundred rounds for use in defensive situations or practice. Then when it is gone I replace it with new ammo so as to not disturb the seal on my stored ammo. I plan to start rotating my ammo as it ages and replacing the storage with fresh. But none of the ammo I currently have is over two years old and I am sure it will be just as good 10 years down the road as it is now the way it's stored. So it may be a few more years before I start shooting the older ammo and rotating in new stock.

There's a section about ammo storage in the FAQ.  Top post in this forum.
