Anyone heard any reports on the performance of the SS109 in Afghnaistan?

We're not using any SS109 anywhere in the world, but M855 Ball is working fine at combat ranges.  The Army is hard at developing a better bullet.

It took over 15 years since the Army Wound Ballistics Laboratory published it's results in the 1980s, but the Army has finally "discovered" how the fragmentation effect works and is working on bullet design to improve this effect at the lower velocities generated by shorter barrels (read M4 Carbine) and at longer ranges.  A Sierra 77gr bullet looks promising.

Regardless of the shortcomings, M855 Ball (and M193 Ball) is still much more effective in wound generation potential than 7.62M43 and 5.45mmM74 (Soviet cartridges).
