How cheap can I make a reliable 16" .22 upper?

I've repurposed a DPMS Oracle 16", 5.56, 1:9 twist upper with a CMMG .22 conversion unit.  To provide full auto capability (if that is a consideration), I "milled" the upper for auto sear clearance with a hand drill and hand grinder.  I don't know the cost, but using a synergistic combination of hubris, self-affirmation, and confirmation bias, I am convinced that it is the lowest cost way I could come up with a dedicated .22 upper.

Best of luck with your project.

As always, MHO, YMMV, etc.

Probably depends on if you have any spare parts laying around.   Dedicated CMMG or TACCOM barrels run $100-$125 plus around $170 for a 22 rimfire BCG.  PA has Anderson uppers onsale for $50 plus I'd spring for a Rousch Sports Keymod handguard for $50 plus $16 for a charging handle and A-2 flash hider.

No gas block or gas tube needed, probably around $400 or less.

Might be cheaper to look for a Nordic or Tactical Solutions complete dedicated upper on sale.  JSE Surplus had TS uppers on sale a couple weeks ago.

Right to Bear Arms have good prices on CMMG 22 LR parts.

Forgot to add: I live in California, and the all watching powers have allowed their subjects to use "assault weapon" features on a rim fire rifle... pistol grip, flash hider, collapisale stock. That being said, I have to have a dedicated rifle. I already plan on shoving a weighted dowel into the buffer tube and gluing it shut... so I can't shoot any other calib er.
