I've seen several people explaining that they shorten their bolt's lenght of travel (using quarters etc) to "just past the bolt catch".
My question is: how do you guys define "just past"? For example: When I fully pull the bolt back, there's about 3/8 to 1/2 inches between the bolt and BHO...is that too far? Do I need to start dropping quarters in the tube to bring it closer to the BHO? I'd prefer not to compress my spring any more than necessary (in hopes of reducing felt recoil) but I dont want to beat my BHO to death either. Im using a Thordsen with a 7.6" buffer tube as seen in the picture below (top in the picture), and a KAK Extended 9mm buffer.

Just past meaning just past, enough so the BHO can spring up, maybe a couple millimeters between it and the face of the bolt. Then of course, test fire to check function of the BHO. And you won't be compressing your spring to a further end point that you would without a spacer, since the overall travel is determined by the buffer bottoming out on the rear internal surface of the receiver extension. So spacer or no, when the buffer is against the back wall, the spring is at the same level of compression. The difference is that with the spacer, the spring will start slightly more compressed than without the spacer, so overall the stroke of the bolt and buffer is lessened, which should help reduce perceived recoil. |

I still have yet to find a spring that will not lock my 9mm bolt back on the last round. It's probably the SpringCo Orange. SpringCo red and Tubb .308 spring work fine. I use the Tubb spring with quarters. |
| I used a Vltor A5 buffer(extended length), and with a standard CAR Extension I am probably about where you are, maybe a touch less. I believe mine is about 1/4-3/8 past the catch. Now, I did used a rifle spring to gain the couple extra coils and increase the rate. Mine has been perfect over about 1500 rounds, locks back every time, and I have not broken a bolt catch. And my catch is just a standard catch that came with a mil spec kit, CMMG, Armalite, Bushy, can't recall now. |
| I have about 1/8 to shy of 1/4" as clearance for my bolt. Any more than that the BHO gets slammed. I don't use quarters although, 9 are just about right. I use a sawn off piece of old screw driver handle that fits perfectly. I measured it against the 9 quarters and cut. |
