Finishing up a 9mm AR build (thanks Macon Armory!), and need to source Colt style 20 and 30rd mags. Other than actual Colt mags, what mags are good to go with a Colt style mag block? If I have access to a milling machine, would I be better off modifying cheap Uzi mags?

Metalform. Brownells has their name on Metalforms. I think PSA does the same thing. Mine run great. I have 8 of them.
My Uzi mags don't run for shit. I found out this is common and they tend to not feed the last 5-6 rounds for shit and do not lock the bolt back after the last shot. |

I knew about the mags not locking back, but never knew they were feeding issues with the mags. I always thought that Colt mags were basically clones of the Uzi mags, just with a different mag catches and followers/rear notch to allow bolt hold after last round. |

PSA has the best prices on Metalforms, wait for a sale. CProducts have worked good for me. |

I have 5 of the 32 round ASC mags from 44 mag.com and they have been bullet proof running with a pro mag mag block and last round Bho has worked flawlessly as well. I am gonna plus 1 this. I have 6 ASC 30 rdrs and 2 20 Rdrs ants after the first range trip they have been 100%. That said, the finish is thick and my bolt(CMMG) do not cycle all the way at first. I just locked it back and let it go forward a couple times each mag to strip off the Finish. These are powder coated I think and that is why they have such a thick finish. After that, gtg. |

Just a heads-up. PSA just put their Metalforms on sale for $19.99. They usually go pretty quick. ![]() Just can't turn down a deal. 4 more I don't need on the way.
Thanks. Got 5 pending! |

Thanks for the links!
I picked up 2x ASC 32rd mags, they are pretty tight in the mag well and seating takes a little effort. Hopefully, this will ease up a bit after a few hundred rounds, as I have read finish can be a little thick. Also picked up a few more Metal Form 32 rounders, as well as a few 25rd converted Uzi mags, so I should have enough to test right now to see what my gun likes. |
| JSE Surplus has RRA 10-round mags for $45 (WTF!?) or Promag 10 round for $15. |
| Ok, got a chance to play around with a 32rd Metal Form and ASC mag for a few rounds today. Metal Form mag was top notch, functioned flawlessly....ASC didn't perform nearly as well. Maybe it needs some breaking in, but I couldn't get it to strip the next round of the mag. It would feed the top round, fire, and the next round would stay in the magazine. I'm not having this problem with MF or ProMag 32 rd mags, so not sure what the issue is. This is a brand new mag, but I still have one more to try... |

I just recently got a 9mm AR. Finally made it to the range to break her in and zero her. I went with Metalform 20 round mags and bought 8 of them at first. 6 of the 8 mags are good to go, however 2 of them will not engage the bolt catch no matter what. It's as if the follower does not come up high enough to engage the catch, live fire or hand cycling the bolt with empty mag inserted. I contacted MF and they asked me to ship the 2 mags to them for them to check out.
Good news on the PSA 32 rounders function, Jason! I just bought 4 of those... Bad news on the ASC 32 rounders! |
| +1 on the ASC mags. I have eight 32 rounders and three 20 rounders. Never had a mag related problem, always hold the bolt back after the last round. Bought all mine from J&G Sales but I think 44mag.com has them the cheapest now. Bizarre to me that some people will pay $50.00 for a Colt marked mag when the ASC's are just as good if not better. Highly recommend the Maglula loader as well, makes loading all those mags a breeze. |

Bad news on the ASC 32 rounders! And, I think I sold you two of those mags brand new, still in wrapper (I got them when I bought my 9mm upper but knew I was going Metalform, so I sold them without even using them). Sorry to hear about this... No worries, I'm hoping its simply a case of the guns not being broken in....surely its nothing a few hundred rounds wont fix! |
| Since I live in California I have to use 10rd Magazines. ASC were locally available so I went with them. Initially the bolt would hangup and the mag catch would not release. So I scraped the coating off the feed lip that was hanging the bolt and cleaned the hole for the mag catch. It took a few hundred rds, but now they all function perfectly. Since they are Stainless Steel, the coating is not important as far as rust is concerned, so this fix my help anyone that had problems. |
| Honestly, at this point I think its more the "newness" of the guns than anything. I ended up buying two 9mm sets, both with 8" barrels and Anderson lowers, and both were fickle with ASC and converted Uzi mags. That being said, I really think they will get better with a few hundred rounds. |

I'm guessing some bolts must be cut more generously than others. My ASC mags have been perfect in my CMMG, but it also came with one - I'm sure they built their gun around running those mags. |

I have a few each of the 20rd CProducts mags with black followers, 32 rd CProducts mags with orange followers and 32 rd promag plastic mags.
All 3 types function 100% in both my RRA 9mm gun and my 9mm frankenpistol (with PSA mag block and bolt). I wanted a few extra and went with the ASC mags. My understanding is that they are pretty much the same as CProducts. Just got them in hand yesterday and they appear to be the exact same mag with a different (nicer) finish and brighter colored orange follower. Hand cycling was successful and they lock the bolt back. Will hopefully be able to run them in the next few weeks but all initial signs seem positive. |
