Debating building or buying a dpms upper? Can I build one for less? Is the dpms good to go?

In my opinion, yes, the DPMS 22LR upper is good to go.

I have a little over 1,000 rounds through mine with no problems using Blackdog mags and a PSA lower with a DSG lower parts kit.

The worst part about the whole deal is keeping yourself in 22 ammo.

I have had mine for about 4.5 years.  It has always ran flawlessly and is very accurate.  Bought a Tac-sol first, it ran poorly jamming considerable and misfiring often.   Luckily I purchased it at Midway and they took it back without any problems.  For $200 less I now have this dependable DPMS.  Glad it worked out like it did!

my DPMS went back to the factory once for a 3 month stay and sat unused for another year after when they didn't fix it.

would I recommend one? yes...

here is the thing...
for whatever reason my firing pin didn't have enough reach or the hammer didn't quite hit it flush...
anyway I fixed my lite strike issue by removing about .02" of material from the back of the bolt with a dremel which allowed the hammer to drive the pin a bit further/harder

the gun ran great when I got it, till it didn't. DPMS didn't do anything to fix it, but I eventually figured it out.

I doubt you'll have this issue, but if you do this is how you fix it.
it's a very reliable upper.
