OK, finally made it to the range. I had to use the thread protector off the Feddersen 10/22 barrel on the Tac-Com AR22 since they cut their threads AR-15 length which is WAY too long for a .22 suppressor.
That kind of ticks me off because before ordering that upper I talked to the owner Tim and told him it was for a suppressor. He should know better. Then again I had to work on the thing when I first got it. So anyway... The Feddersen barreled 10/22 & Tac Com AR22 I got earlier this year both shot just fine - I could tell no difference in group sizes from previous trips to the range using just some of the same ammo. This thing works just like everyone said it would. At a mere 0.3 oz heavier than the smaller Sparrow, I can honestly say I don't even notice it hanging out there. I might on a handgun, but I did not on either carbine. It is also rated for .22WMR and .17 HM2 & HMR. I found that Standard velocity ammo has a softer pop. High velocity ammo (Mini mags, etc) seemed to have a normal .22 pop. Being at a public range I wouldn't remove my muffs entirely because I was surrounded by CF rifles... I just could lift one side, fire a shot and put them back on. My electronic muffs would attenuate the report on the HV rounds. One of the ironies of becoming hard of hearing. Those shots (and other sharp noises like dog barks) HURT. People I can barely understand but my dogs can cripple me. Now match/moderate ammo was a different story. I had gotten my hands on some CCI Quiet (for too much $$) and it was weird. The clacking of the bolt at rear and front and the hit on the target backer were louder than the report! I could tell this even with my muffs on because they are electronic... they did not attenuate any sound at all so I could hear all of those. I have read this before but had my doubts... I'm a believer! The ONLY bad thing is that with those CCI Quiets the POI is about 4" low. BUT... that is not a huge problem and here's why: I got the AR 22 as a companion to my M4gery for cheaper shooting. The CF version doesn't have a can. It shoots SGB and Mini Mags quite well (after my action and barrel work). However... it would not cycle with the CCI load. That possibility was known before purchase though it has worked better (but not 100%) with other match ammo. Oddly neither would my 10/22. It has functioned 100% on match ammo previously but it would not chamber the next round with the CCI quiet. This must be some really slow stuff. But it is quiet! The end result is if I want to really muffle sound, The AR 22 may not be the unit to use. If I can find another match load that will cycle and is still that quiet, I might.... but I had my hunting box of ammo, not my match box so I couldn't test any. If it will not work, I will build a dedicated 10/22 along with a short barreled MKII that I already have for really stealthy work. Any of those corn robbing squirrels & racoons at the deer lease are on notice... they are in trouble! If anyone has been thinking about it, putting it off or are just curious.... everything you have heard is true. Including the part where I am asking myself "WHY didn't I get one sooner!?!" Get online to Silencerco.com and get started. They can provide a Trust document and they take care of all the paperwork. All I had to do was pay for it and wait. The paying was easy. The waiting a little harder. |

For me, a bolt action 22 was way down low on the list of guns to buy, but on a whim I jumped on one way before I thought I ever would. I have to say that it has proved to be a seriously fun suppressor host. I can shoot any subsonic ammo I'm able to find since function isn't an issue, and it is by far the quietest of my four 22 suppressor hosts. My other 3 hosts (1 SBR and 2 pistols) all have barrels short enough to keep bulk pack ammo subsonic, so they are there when I want to blast away, but my bolt action is just as satisfying to shoot. You really begin to realize what a suppressor can do when you find yourself looking for a different backstop to shoot into because the one you're using is so damn LOUD. |
