I've read some about needing to use spacers and different springs and buffers to avoid breaking bolt catches. However I haven't found exactly what combo I need to make this work with my setup.  I currently have a Phase 5 pistol tube, CMMG BCG and CMMG 9mm buffer.  What buffer spring would be best to use with these parts? What's the approximate length of spacer needed? I have a spacer that is about 2" long, but I'm not sure if that's too long.

Skip the spacers and get a 9mm buffer:

Or the 9-Q:  http://heavybuffers.com/ar15carbine.html

Edit:  Just saw you already have a 9mm buffer.  Some folks use the Wolf XP spring with their 9QT/9Q buffer.
Edit 2:  Didn't know that the CMMG 9mm buffer is the same length as a carbine buffer.....I suggest you get the  ST-9X or the 9Q and skip the spacrs

So since the CMMG 9mm buffer is the same length as a regular AR buffer, would a spacer help?

Yes you will need a spacer if the buffer is a standard AR15 length configuration i.e. CMMG 9mm buffer. The easiest thing to do is use some quarters or a Delrin plug cut to the appropriate length so that the bolt travels no more than 1/4" from the back of the bolt catch(Spikes also makes a spacer that doubles as a twangbuster to get rid of the annoying spring chatter in the receiver extension), this will ensure that there will not be enough over-travel to build up enough inertia to break your BHO. In my experience I have to play with the weights of different buffers to get the rig to run right so sticking with a standard length buffer means I can swap them out without going through added steps of adding / removing spacers for different manufacturer lengths. I keep a couple of different buffers in my field kit for different loads and running suppressed.

Just about to post this: Aktive 9mm buffer

It might help you out, seems that they have been working to kinda standardize things...

A Spike's spacer or 7 quarters will work fine with the CMMG buffer if you're only worried about saving your bolt catch. Going to a heavier dedicated length buffer like the Spike's ST-9X @ 8.5 oz (that's what I run) or one of Slash's 8 oz or 10 oz Q buffers will really smooth out the recoil over a lighter buffer. I looked at the website for the Aktive buffer but they don't list a weight.

It's listed at 5.2oz
