I wanted to see if other guys were having issues with their M&P 15-22. I bought mine factory new back in March. I bought it to duplicate my duty gun and put a SIG red dot sight on it and a LMT SOPMOD stock. When it works, the rifle is extremely accurate and fun to shoot and between March and today I fired 780 rounds of Federal bulk pack, CCI Velociter, Armscor, federal bulk pack and Eley. Unfortunately, I've had a lot of issues as well.
At approximately round 400 I noticed that the hammer pin would walk out after a few rounds. Checking the web I found that it could be an issue so I bought KNS 15-22 pins. When taking the rifle apart to clean, I've noticed that the rear take down pin doesn't catch in its detent when pushed out so more often than not, the pin falls completely out of the lower. Not a huge deal, but its only a matter of time before it falls out and rolls under something during maintenance. Today I had an OBD using Armscor ammunition (36 grain high velocity ammo). Took it to the S&W armorer and the extractor, extractor spring and pin are all gone so he's going to send it in to get it fixed. What's interesting is that even without the extractor, it still extracted the vast majority of rounds fired - especially the velocitor ammo. My question to all of you is are any of you been having issues with this rifle? like I stated above, its a great and very accurate rifle when it works and I like it as a duty rifle trainer but i'm starting to get frustrated with the issues. I didn't post this in the industry section but should I? |
| Is the takedown pin decent and spring still in there? If so I can't see how the pin can just fall out. Walking trigger pins are almost always due to hammer spring being installed incorrectly so check and make sure the legs come from underneath and lay in the notch in the trigger pin. Due to being blowback operated they will still run without an extractor for the most part. I got mine 5 weeks ago and have around 2500 rounds through it so far and it's been awesome, of those fired I have exactly 4 malfunctions to date, mostly due to being filthy and started halfway through it's first outing. I've frog lubed it up good and ran about 2k through it since it's last malfunction,I can't complain as I'm used to at least 1-2 malfunctions every mag or two coming from the 10/22 platform prior to being this thing. I absolutely love it and plan on getting 1 or 2 more of them,I just wish someone would start making aftermarket barrels for them, I'm dying to sbr one but really don't want to hack down the factory barrel. |
| The detent (and spring) are still present but seem to offer little resistance to the take down pin. The rear pin is grooved and the detent fits in the groove. The groove also runs the entire circumference of the pin but it seems like the detent spring is weak. The trigger spring / hammer spring are all installed correctly. The various gun boards all discussed these pins walking out and the KNS pins are specially made for the 15-22. That was an easy fix. |

Having owned two M&P15-22's and used them in competition where I found them wanting, I think there is some room for improving the gun after the sale. I'm not the only one and, while many owners are wildly enthusiastic over anything M&P15-22, conversations at the range and in gun stores reveal there is a niche market for the gun. Here is a short list of "wants" I've heard from owners: An aluminum billet upper to eliminate the POI shifts experienced on very hot days. A "field repair survivor kit" which includes springs, firing pin, and other small parts. After-market barrels of various lengths and profiles. A user removable lower receiver extension (buffer tube) so A1/A2/PRS buttstocks can be used. But the likelihood of any of these is slim as S&W never intended the gun to be "user" friendly like the mil-spec guns are. But you never know, even Ruger relaxed its patents for the 10-22, maybe Smith will do the same some day. Ted |
| I've had my 15-22 for about a month, I have about 2000 rounds through it with various brands and weights, I have yet to have a single malfunction with mine. I've also only cleaned it twice, once right after I picked it up and took it home, and then after dumping about 2000 rounds in a day. As for the rear take down pin falling out, I haven't had that issue either. I wasn't paying full attention when installing my magpul moe+ grip and flattened part of the take down pin spring, I cut off approximately 6 coils off the spring before reinstalling and mine still works fine. |
| In general the late model Smith has been fairly trouble free as shown by the replies. But like any machine you can have 'variations". Let Smith work on it, they do things right and should fix you right up. I have resisted on buying one as they just don't feel right to some of us (we are all different) and I like the fact that with a "real" AR with dedicated upper you can truly make it anyway you want as all standard parts fit. Meanwhile sorry you are having issues but trust in Smith, their service has always been very good about making things right. |

Did you buy it brand new or used? I've put ~10,000 rounds through mine and have never had a single issues beyond the occasional FTF with .22LR. Sounds like you got a lemon or someone was screwing with it prior to you purchasing it. I bought it brand new from the factory. I really do like it and am hoping that once it comes back its fully good to go again. the rear take down is a minor issue but i'm concerned that I could lose it during maintenance. |
