I am sorry for the basic topic that's asked over and over , but I'm using an iPad to access this site and "search" function is difficult to use ....

Ok now that's been addressed

I built my 223/556

Now I want a pistol caliber version , for simplistic purposes I wish to use a standard lower with some type of device to allow use of mags for that caliber

1. Best caliber 9mm or 45acp . ? I am a dedicated 1911 owner , and I have also crossed over to the dark side in recent years . Bought a Glock 19 for my wife , and then I bought one for myself and a baby 26 back up
I realize best is subjective at best , I want something that runs and cycles without a lot of headaches , I'm not wishing to debate stopping power because I believe that bad guys don't like to leak and either caliber will meet my needs

2. I'm not going to SBR so it will be a legal limit in length

3. Mag suggestions ? Try to use Glock mags , Uzi mags , grease gun mags ,... Again as with my caliber choice I want it to work well

I'm most likely going to assemble an upper or buy a complete upper

Thanks so much in return for this knowledge , I can offer 20 years of experience with lawn equipment knowledge ( LOL ) spring is around the corner

9mm. Pure simple. Pure fun. Compliments your Glock handguns as well (ammo). Never had a jam in thousands of rounds, semi and full. I've stayed with Colt mags, but YMMV.

ETA - this is with 10.5" uppers and shorter as well.

I have a CMMG 9mm that runs great and have no complaints.

I would go 9mm over .45 due to expense of ammo.

If I were to do it over again, these look interesting…

There are a lot of choices for 9mm setups, not many for .45acp setups. I think Olympic Arms has the only factory .45acp blowback upper, and Ron Williams has some nice .45 DI uppers, although most posts regarding Ron's DI setup seem to indicate factory .45 is pretty dirty and most reload their own. 9mms also have the option of 30 rnd mags in both the Colt and Glock style setups, if you're running Glock pistols then a Glock mag lower may be a good bet. Oly uses proprietary .45 mags, about 10 rounds I think. There are some dedicated lowers for modified grease gun mags if you want hi capacity .45.  If you stock both calibers then either would be a good choice, before ammo prices skyrocketed I was getting cheap factory 9mm for $10/box and cheap .45 for $15/box so ammo costs aren't that significant for me, but I only buy bulk in 9mm & 7.62x39 so that's what I always have the most of on hand.
