First of all, apologies if this isnt the right forum.  I couldnt find one that talked about .22 uppers.

Anyways, I am considering ordering one of those full chiappa .22 uppers that come with two mags.  Considering there is no 5.56 in my area to be had, I might as well put my AR to use..

How cheap were these pre-SHTF?  I can get them for around $360 (again, fully complete upper, with 2 mags)

I feel like they were always around that price, but sometimes my memory not so good.

Thanks fellas.

I think I just answered my own question.. TERRIBLE reviews of failures.

Yes you did..  They are pretty terrible.

If you want to run a .22 conversion either go with a dedicated upper from CMMG, or a .22 conversion unit.
Prices right now are pretty crazy but deals do pop up on the EE.

They were running right around $300 pre panic. I have one and haven't had any problems what so ever with it. I only have about 3000 rounds thru it so hard to say anything about longevity. I have done multiple mag dumps to see if the groups would change or barrel would come loose from the polymer receiver due to the heat. Everything stayed tight and groups did not shift. So far so good.

i've got an ati m4-22 upper, and haven't had any problems with it.  i've only run about 700 through it, though.  accurate, light and fun.  can't wait for my bdm 50 rounder to get here.

New ones run better then the first batch. AIM had them at $299 and they run the BlackDog mags that work with the CMMG .22.

If you have a 5.56 upper look into the drop in kits.

Borrow one and take it for a drive "if" you can find .22lr ammo

Yes I would go a differant route. Taccom or CMMG comes to mind.

Problem is, there is no more .22 to be had in my area than .223. None of either one..

lots of non compliant parts ( barrel not threaded, faked A2 flash hider..). For about 100 more you can have a dedicated .22lr upper that will use a lot of ar15 parts.

Another way to look at it is it's only $100 more than a CMMG drop in conversion kit.  And for OP, he can actually buy it.  Good luck finding most .22 uppers right now.

Like was said above, some parts were redesigned lately and the reliability seems to be improved.  I haven't been able to do a ton of testing, but I can tell you that after ~5-600 rounds through mine (in one outing) I have no complaints.  When I went to clean the gun I was also VERY glad to have a dedicated upper for .22

I bought it to be able to get more rounds down range in the near term.  If the bolt breaks and I have warranty problems, I will replace it with another Ciener type BCG and still not be out a lot of money.

Another option is to just look for an M&P15-22

Yes, stay away from them!  I have no idea why they pinned the flash hider instead of threading it on.  I was hoping to use my suppressor on it.  They've had to replace the bolt three times on mine because it literally blew apart each time in the upper.  The barrel does not want to stay locked in tight.  To make it even worse ATI services them and only for two years; after that you have to take it to a gunsmith or throw it away.

My $.002.

I have all three items discussed: S&W MA15-22, .22 conversion kit and the Chiappa dedicated upper.

The 15-22 is an amazing rifle, super accurate, more reliable than my 10/22 and rem 597 so that is a viable method to shoot .22LR from an AR platform,
and with some work it can utilize the slide-fire stock although plan on spending a ton of time loading magazines.

The drop in kit is just like you would expect.  The good part is that you use your upper including all the sights, handguards and other customizations that are specific to every rifle.  The downside is that the barrel is subject to a small amount of wear and the .22 ammo gets the whole gun dirty.  I prefer not to use this method.

The Chiappa .22 dedicated upper is of adequate quality, especially for the price.  I paid $350 and it comes with 2 mags.  I had an extra cheapo lower (New Frontier polymer) so I decided to put them together and see what happens.  The Chiappa is accurate and dependable.  Not as good as the MP15-22 but pretty good.  I customized it by removing the handguard and front sight assemble and installing a cheap aluminum free float carbide length handguard and topped it off with a 1 inch X 4 power small scope.  I have run this thing hard trying everything from 50 and 100 yard precision shooting to combat simulations with quick double taps and, of course, full rapid fire mag dumps and it has been very reliable and accurate.

So, all three options have benefits and detractions.  Decide what is best for you but if you are considering the Chiappa .22LR upper I would recommend it.

I have the CMMG drop in and decided to buy the Chiappa upper when I saw it for $310 w/free shipping.

It arrived and I went to install it on my Spikes lower. The pins would not push through the holes to mount it so I had
passed a twist drill through it a few turns. It mounted up after that but would not close due to the striker face hitting
the notch in the top of the RRA hammer on my lower. You have to cock the hammer to close it.

After getting past those issues, I put about 200 rounds through it getting quarter sized. groups.
After a few FTFs and the bolt not going into battery I tried rocking the mag to the front to tip the
round up (they fit loose back to front). It fed better for a about 25 rounds with less FTFs but after
getting dirty it I had to cycle a few rounds every shot.

I intend to polish the feedramp, polish everything and clean it out.
When I emailed the seller the day it arrived about the pin-holes they passed me off to Chiappa.
I decided to just live with it. I'll get it fixed/figured out eventually.

I also happened to have an ATI composite lower in the mail so I am making a dedicated .22LR POS gun.
If I can't fix it I plan to buy another 5.56 upper and shelve this thing.

15-22s were going for $600+ when I found this upper so I jumped.
I am seeing them for $449 again so I wish I had waited but at
least I am getting an extra (polycrap) lower before any ban hits
