I have an original SS old style conversion kit. I love the thing, pretty damn accurate in my AR-15. Lately I think it has worn out. Last time I took it out the thing keyholed every shot and was all over the place. Shooting regular 5.56 thru my rifle is still super accurate. I took the AR out today and shot about 60 rounds of 5.56. Awesome grouping. I popped in the conversion kit and blasted 100 rounds from a bench rest.
After shooting the 5.56 at 40 yards I expected another perfect group with the .22 kit. Nope. It looked like I hit the target with a 12 gauge shotgun blast. Is my kit finally worn out? It has thousands of rounds thru it and the chamber adapter was replaced once. |

Might take a look down the bore of the chamber adapter to see it there is metal fouling - lead or copper - build up. I use the lead wipes (?) cloth cut into small patches and wrapped around an old .22 brush - just run it through to remove fouling. This can also be used to remove leading that builds up just in front of the chamber in .22 barrels. Run the cloth wrapped brush a few times just in front of the chamber. (This apparently happens to all .22 barrels). A small bore match guy told me about using the lead away cloth (I can't for the life of me remember the name of that lead removal cloth). The small bore shooters are fanatics - change brand new Anschutz barrels for custom barrels, change barrels when they see or even suspect a barrel may be losing accuracy.
Of course - entirely possible you've worn it out. Wish I had time to shoot that much - YMMV |

That's very cool and that's good to know that they stand behind their kit.
I have an older stainless and a non-stainless but I've yet to shoot them enough to wear them out. Besides the accuracy issue did you have any other indication the unit was worn or nearing the end of usefulness? Give us a range report. |
