| What distance do you guys zero your 22 AR at? I am sure the right answer is to zero them at whatever distance you shoot. But i figure it cant hurt to see what you guys are doing. Is 50 yards normally a good basic start? |
|
Thanks. Thats what i thought. I have a VERY short little test fire area that is only 25'. It is hitting a few inches low at 25', should that get better or worse at 50 yards?
I just read a little about the line of sight being so high above the bore on a AR. It makes sense why the elevation will be hitting low so close up. I will wait till i get it out at 50yrds to zero elevation. |

I set my NcStar 3-9x42R BDC on #2 and zeroed the rifle and scope to 25 yards........When I set the BDC on #3 I am dead on at 50 yards, #4 dead on at 100 yards, and #5 is about 125 yards.......The red dot on my Walther Colt C 4 is set at 25 and I have learned to hold over for longer ranges.........The red dot on my GSG AK 47 22 cal is set for 50 yards........The reflex sight on my HK MP5 SD is set to 25 yards and I hold over to shoot at longer ranges..........The BDC on my NcStar was intended for 5.56/.223 ammo and I was told it might not work for 22lr....It sure worked for me......
Someone mentioned to set your sights to were you shoot most then learn to hold under or over for different ranges. |

When I was working on my commercial pilots license I took the check ride for my instrument rating and had the misfortune of doing it on a day with 40 kt winds aloft, at near 90 degree angles to the final approach course for a couple of the approaches. My first attempt at doing a proper holding patter on the outer marker was a dismal failure - but since I blew downwind and remained within the protected side of the airspace, he let me stay in the holding pattern until I finally figured out the extreme angles involved (4 turns before I had matching 1 minute inbound and outbound legs) and I went on to pass the checkride.
I do most of my shooting at 25 yards, Occasionally 50. 100 is a "Bridge Too Far" in any wind unless shooting big steel plates.... Dave S In the debrief he noted that my instructors had apparently never had me fly approaches on extremely windy days and he said that was pretty common - but that pilots have to fly instruments on really windy days. The lesson I learned is to train like you fight and don't be afraid to practice in the wind. ––––- I've also applied that philosophy to my shooting. Consequently I have no problem hitting 5" steel plates at 100 yards even when the wind is blowing using a CMMG dedicated upper and an Aimpoint Comp M2, or even with the decidedly non-match Magpul BUIS, and the majority of the shots generally impact in a 2" or 3" circle in the middle of the plate. If you struggle with 100 yards in the wind with a .22LR, you just need to get out and shoot more in the wind. ––––- With that in mind, I zero at 100 yards and then hold under at 25-75 yards. With that zero, you are .8" high at 25 yards, 2.5" high at 50 yards and 2.3" high at 75 yards. If you are shooting Iron sights it is a lot easier to hold under at shorter ranges than it is to try to hold over a target that is now obscured by the front post. |
