There are a few threads on the M&P 15-22 if you look around the different forums on this site: e.g.
AR rimfire section mp thread Armory rimfire section pic thread |

If you already own an AR-15 lower you can buy a dedicated 22 upper like those offered by CMMG, DPMS, Tactical Solution, and Nordic. These uppers seem to get the best reviews. I have 2 CMMG 22 uppers with their own lowers. These rifles are as close to being as reliable as a 22 rimfire can be and make a great training aid. The advantage of the S&W is the rifle is very light and with the collapsible stock is easier for smaller kids to shoot. The New Frontier Arms polymer lowers are getting very good reviews and would be an inexpensive lower for a dedicated 22 rimfire.
I just helped a buddy put a 22 AR-15 together, $70 PSA lower, RRA NM LPK from Joe Bob outfitters, PSA 6 position M-4 stock and CMMG M-4LE 22 upper from Hamland tactical shipped for $370. He'll have $625 total with one mag but hasn't bought a rear sight. I'm going to loan him a red dot till he decides what he wants. This rifle should still be around for his great grand kids to shoot. |
| No question the M&P 15-22. No conversion, designed as a 22 and they run flawlessly. Mine I have unknown count on it but probably 6-7K down the pipe. It is dead accurate for 22lr ammo being the limiting factor at 50m I can hold a silver dollar size group with iron sights. |

Does it HAVE to be an AR based .22? I recently picked up that HK MP5SD .22 25rd model and love it. The thing eats anything I have thrown at it so far. Put a claw rail on it and add a decent little scope and you have an awesome little rifle for young shooters. Took mine to KY last month just after I bought it for the younger kids to shoot and they had a blast with this thing. It is heavy enough to realize it is a real gun yet compact enough to be able to let the smaller arms maneuver it well. If you are set on the AR... The M&P15 .22 is the one that I have been looking at and seems to get all the good reviews. The HK 416 .22 is a favorite of a friend of mine too, but it seems to be a little more expensive than the M&P. |

An AR-15 lower and dedicated .22LR upper does not have to be all that expensive.
With a little shopping around, you can find a lower parts kit for $60, an M4 style tele-stock or A2 fixed stock for another $60 and then put it in a lower receiver that you can find for as little as $80, for a total of $200 invested in a lower that can then be used as is with a 5.56mm upper. A CMMG dedicated .22LR upper will run another $400, for $600 total in the rifle or carbine - only about $100 more than and M&P 15-22 and about the same as a Colt M4 .22LR, but with a lot more flexibility and growth potential. |

Thanx All for the replies. I've ordered the M&P 15 22. I think it's lite weight will work best for both my 13 yr old and the boss the 8 yr old...and having an excuse to buy another rifle works for me Thanx Des i think the best thing about getting a dedicated .22 AR or upper is that while you say its for your wife/kid/etc.., you've really just got yourself another rifle lol

Jacobrob.....Get a bi pod for the 15 22....It makes it a lot easier for younguns to shoot.....I put one on mine and my 50 and 100 yard groups improved dramatically over shooting on improvised supports....The 15 22 is a fantastic rifle......
Joeylsaacs........I put the low adapter on my HK MP5 SD and mounted a cheap reflex sight on it.....It is unbelievable how accurate the rifle is......I got good 25 yard groups with the iron sights, but the reflex sight is great at everything from 0 to 100 yards. http://i856.photobucket.com/albums/ab130/dbw1/029.jpg http://i856.photobucket.com/albums/ab130/dbw1/009-2.jpg |
| If you are going just for plinking, get a cheap red dot or reflex sight from Walmart....A regular scope with cross hair reticules is best for accuracy....Look in hunting and look thru the scopes......I bought a NcStar 3-9x42R for under $80....It was shipped to the house by Wayfare..............Walmart has a bunch of scopes and other gun accessories.....I was totally amazed when I discovered this.....It has saved me a lot of money because they are cheaper than many of the other gun accessory sites. |

I decided to go with the AR for the basic's. I'm thinking of the hk down the line. The Question now is what optic? after we work on the irons for a while. any suggestions? Des I went with a 1" riser and cheap BSA red dot to start with. For $25, you couldn't beat it as I needed one that day. I have plans on replacing it with a Primary Arms Micro Dot but the BSA won't stop holding zero and wont die!!! I have a PA on my AR so I know that will be the replacement. |

I vote for the S&W AR 15-22. I jsut bought one for my son (12 years old) and put rail covers, MagPul Angled Fore Grip and some extra mags from Cheaper than Dirt.
I bought the rifle at Wal Mart for $425.00 and all the other stuff for under $125.00 delivered. I am on the lookout for a MagPul CTR stock and flip up front and rear sights. Then going to have the barrel threaded for a suppressor. It is a blast to shoot. Forgot to add that we BOTH love it to death. Hell, even SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) thinks it is cool as all get out. |

Kboltz............................Buy one each....You can't go wrong....I love all of mine.

I was ready to pull the trigger on a M&P15-22 until I stumbled into this. http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn132/SirJames_album/DSC03010.jpg http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn132/SirJames_album/DSC03011.jpg http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn132/SirJames_album/DSC02991.jpg http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn132/SirJames_album/182283b8.jpg As some of you know I was the winner of the January UHFO Contest put on by the good folks at Larue. They took a PredatAR chassis and the innards out of a Tac Sol kit to make this sexy beast. It runs like a top, I did have a couple mags that didn't work very well but since fixed that issue. Its just like shooting my other AR's the only difference being that the bolt does not lock back after the last round. Seems not to be too picky with ammo, but I run mostly CCI through it. Is reasonably accurate with the Primary Arms Micro. Again if I had not come into this I would have the M&P. Sir James... now THAT is awesome. congrats on the win. |
