I am trying to build my first AR build and want to do an SBR 9mm. I really like the free float rails like DD and Larue. Im pretty handy but I know I dont have the skill level at this time to solder or grind down and remove a pin to take off a muzzle break or flash hider. My questions are:

1. Since this is an SBR, do I really need to permanently attach the hider or brake? If not, what do I need to get to attach it so it will stay put unless I want to take it off?
2. What company makes a good 9mm barrel?

Thanks for your help!

if it's an SBR then there is no need to pin a FH or brake.  ADCO has Rock River barrels and uppers for use with the Colt 9mm system.  it uses UZI mags and a mag block.  i just built a 16" using all Rock River parts from ADCO and also have the bolt ramped to take stress off of the hammer pin.  also ADCO has many barrel lengths to choose from.  once my stamp comes back i'll be putting a 7" barrel on.

There is no need to pin a muzzle device on an S.B.R.... but be carful... an AR-15 and a short (Under 16") barrel "Could" be considered "Constructive Possession" of a short barrel rifle...even if not assembled!!!
Do your paperwork first... and wait till your stamp comes in... or if you must buy a barrel early...  at least have a friend (who owns no AR's) hold onto it, till you get your stamp... It sounds silly... but
it is a gun law... it is meant too!!!

Good Luck!
Fred

Here are two links for short barrels: but do a search... you may find some cheaper!

1. No need to permanently attach a muzzle device unless it's for legal reasons like reaching 16" or if your state doesn't allow threaded barrels.  A crush washer or peel washer should be all you need.

2. Adco has a good reputation for short 9mm barrels.  I'm about to order one from them myself.

As far as needing to grind the flashider, that is only needed when dealing with a permanently attached flashider.  This is not usually the case except on 14.5" and 11.5" barrels with long muzzle devices to reach 16".

If you're doing a freefloat, just have the barrel cut off and threaded like I did.

I used a standard carbine freefloat and the end of the 'new' muzzle is back inside the handguards. A long 4.5 or 5.5" flash hider just reaches out, and a can hides a lot of its length inside. I did have to remove the heat shields to get the can in though.

There is no barrel length requirement for an SBR, therefore no need to pin the FH/FA/suppressor mount.

BCM sometimes has 9mm barrels; others are Spikes (used to have Lothar-Walthers), ADCO and TROS.

There may be more but I stopped at Spikes (L-W).

Doing exactly the same thing, here. I have a RRA 16" complete upper with a Hahn Block that runs flawlessly. I'll second (fifth? sixth?) ADCO. They have short barrels in a variety of lengths for around $170 shipped, or will cut (and most importantly re-crown and thread concentrically) your existing barrel for around $70. Remember that if you're interested in suppressing at some point in the future you probably want to get 1/2-28 threads instead of the AR 9mm standard of 1/2-36, as 9mm suppressors are most often 1/2-28.

No, you don't need a hider or brake. I'm buying a thread protector to cover the threads of the barrel, because I want to supress at some point.

If you do get 1/2-28 threads and decided to attach a flash hider/brake MAKE SURE the hider/brake  is drilled out for the 9mm projectile! The reason RRA and others do 1/2-36 threads on the 9mm AR barrels is to prevent someone from accidentally attaching a 1/2-28 hider/brake that is designed for a 223/556 projectile, and blowing the end of their barrel off (or worse.)

You could also avoid the entire threading issue and go for a TROS 9mm 3-lug barrel which isn't threaded, so you couldn't attach a normal hider/brake, and later get a 3-lug suppressor or suppressor adapter like the Multimount or others.

My Form 1 goes out next week, and I'm stopping by my dealer today to pay for my supressor. :)

Since you seem pretty new to this, you do know you will have to register the lower and pay a fee of $200 to the BATFE correct?  If you already knew this, my apologies, I just don't want anybody to get in trouble because of not knowing.

That being said, if it is a registered SBR, there is no reason to pin and weld a muzzle device.  I used a Spike's Tactical Lothar Walther 5" barrel with a Gemtech 3 lug mount.  Lots of people also really like the TROS barrels.  If you are using a normal flash hider, the crush washer will keep the device from backing off.  Other muzzle devices such as the three lug mounts use an adhesive called Rocksett to keep them tight.
