I have a spare surplus lower that Im going to build a dedicated .22 upper for. I did a search but couldnt find some answers for a few questions I have. On the CMMG site for ordering the upper, are any of the add-ons necessary? Im looking at the 16" Light weight upper. Also, which LPK would work? I keep reading about using a rounded hammer over a notched hammer, but who uses a rounded hammer? For optics I plan on getting a PA red dot.

I ordered a dedicated upper on Friday with all options minus the hand-guard upgrades. Can you be specific what add-ons you are refereeing to?

I'm kinda a newb when it comes to the 22 AR stuff but after talking to a CMMG rep on Friday he said:

Bolt upgrade is for a stainless steel bolt instead of the phosphated(Easier to clean with messy 22s) + The forward assist option allows you to use the forward assist .
BHOA upgrade: allows the bolt to stay open when a mag is released during changes without it the bolt will close when changing mags. Allow use of bolt catch.
Stainless steel collar: ease of cleanup and also if you have to take the assembly apart for cleanup it allows you to accurately gauge alignment of the receiver plate.

It's all kind of hard to explain.  my advice is get on CMMGs website and research the options and watch the vids posted there on how the 22 system works.
Upgrades
Parts

Simply put the Forward assist option and BHOA are made so you can use those features on the rifle as you would have them on a 5.56 setup. I guess you could say they are niceties more than necessary. Regarding the SS bolt and SS no go, I would say they are needed for total reliability and ease of maintenance.

Just about every new LPK will have a rounded hammer.
I always recommend the stainless bolt and stainless collar. Forward assist is up to you.

that's not completely true. RRA's still have a notched hammer, and there was one more kit that i got that was notched as well but i forgot the brand. i've gone with Spike's, RRA, Daniel Defense, and DPMS kits.  Almost all my other LPK's were round though.  but know i've bought quite a few LKP's in the past, and there were two that i bought that were not rounded.

I'm having trouble with my cmmg upper can't get bhoa device to work. even bought gen2 mag followers.  when the bhoa is in it will not fire last round, when I take it out the bolt will not lock back but last round will fire. there is a screw to adjust but i have tried all the way in to all the way out to no avail. Emails dont get answered very well. There is a new mag design which is not out yet and no word when it will be released. if this new mag does not work will probably sell it. I have better luck with my sig 522. Sometimes emails dont get answered  at all or it is a week or 2 then asking for a picture of some part???

I'll find that the hammer is a part on the LOWER receiver.

You might want to post this over at the CMMG forum. The BHOA can be sensitive. I know I use to have trouble with mine but now it works perfectly. I made some easy adjustments and solved the problems. There is so much variation in the "Standard" AR lower its not funny. Some lowers take a bit of TLC to get just right. There are several people on this forum that can help.
