I have seen several pictures in the .22LR thread of rifles without gas systems. Does that mean the after each round the rifle has to be recharged by hand with the charging handle?

Also I am planning on making a designated .22LR upper, does it hurt to just use a .223 barrel and get a bolt carrier group for a .22LR and leave it?

Kinda off subject but I also seen alot of SBR in the .22LR thread so I guess it is on subject. Does anyone know what all it takes to own a SBR in Mississippi?

most of the 22 uppers are going to be blowback (semi-auto).

the twist for most 223 barrels is OK but not optimal for shooting 22LR.

can't help on #3

If it's going to be dedicated, you're FAR better off to get a dedicated 22LR barrel, with correct 22LR chamber and twist.

It doesn't HURT to use a .223 barrel, but will not get you best accuracy.  If you must use a .223 barrel, try to get an old style 1:12 twist.  It won't shoot heavier modern ammo very well, but will shoot 55gr M193 type .223 just fine, and do much better accuracy-wise with the 22LR.

Thanks for the info. Can anyone suggest good quality about 10" .22LR designated barrels?

The only 10" barrels are going to be custom, such as Clint Beyer or Model 1 might have them.
Keep in mind, 1.5" will be inside the receiver. This means you will have 8.5" of barrel sticking out from the receiver.
The CMMG Evolution is your best bet for a conversion or dedicated build.

I agree with the above. 1/12 will give you best accuracy from a 5.56 barrel using .22
It still will not be as good as a 1/16 .22 barrel for accuracy.

Thanks.

I'd go dedicated like the S&W M&P rather than building your own.  I've noticed for some people's build that the 22LR is pretty sensitive.  I have 2 friends who really like the S&W.

For what it's worth, the CMMG BCG has not been sensitive to any upper I've run them in from 5" to 20". I never made any changes to the BCG, springs, or anything. I've used 5 different CMMG BCG's in every one just to make sure.
No issues with cycling for me.
Spikes was a different story.

Thanks for the info, when tax refunds get here I'm going to get a Model 1 .22lr upper for my M&P lower.

My CMMG BCGs worked great... Once I realized the recoil spring tension was insufficient to both cycle and close the charging handle latch.
