So I finally get out to the range with my CMMG upper, get it loaded up, cycle the bolt, and nothing. I look at the bolt and it's about 1/2" out of battery so I give it a little assistance and bang, then nothing, the bolt did not go into battery again (it's the Kimber of .22's). I pull the rear take down pin and click, the bolt slides into battery, so I take the bolt out and find out that the charging handle is broke, no big deal have another one in the bag, so I continue to take the bolt out and run it by hand a few times, it's greased up and running smooth as glass. I put it all back together with the new charging handle and charge the bolt, yep, it's stuck out of battery again so I jiggle the bolt release and click it's in battery. Is the bolt hanging up on the bolt release a common problem on the CMMG uppers?
I'll send an inquiry to CMMG but probably won't get a response for a day or two and I'm curious if anyone else has had this problem and has an easy fix. |

Did I miss something here? Was this put together with or without the Bolt Hold Open device? I know if it is in and out of adjustment it can drag on the bolt and cause a problem like this.
IF the upper has the device simply remove it and see if it cycles properly. Also, did this upper get the cleaning brush in the chamber job done to it yet? (See the sticky on this). The CMMG upper/bolt are by design very reliable. That does not mean that nothing can ever go wrong. With AR's we have such a mixed bag of parts that things can happen. Best to just do a step-by-step process to figure out which part is actually the root cause. I have had to do this a few times myself. In the end most things turn out to be simple fixes. |

As mentioned, Sounds like the bolt's catching on the bolt catch. Jewelers files will
make for a quick fix on that. Only take off as little of the top as you can to get it to work. This is fairly common to need doing... Charging Handle is a warranty thing... Should be no problem to get replaced... Spec / Dave S |

The BAD's have caused issues but it sounds like the bolt catch is too high. Try filing a little off the top. It won't affect the 5.56 operation but will give clearance to the .22 bolt.
Same old thing. Tolerances. The AR is hard to impossible to make drop in anything because of different manufacturers tolerances. Dave N |

Yup. My BAD Lever caused problems with my 22 Conversion as well. I'd also take a little off the top of the bolt catch... Also, check to make sure your magazines aren't rubbing the bolt too much, and binding the bolt. Doubt that's the case, but check it anyway. Some lowers have the magazine catch slot milled a bit out of spec (too high), and seated magazines can then sometimes bind on the bolt. Not normally a 5.56mm problem, but can cause issues with the 22 Conversions. You should be able to get it working. |
| Followed the advice of the wise one's here by taking a little off the top of the bolt catch and polishing the feed ramp and chamber and it's manually cycling the way it should even with the BAD Lever. now I just need to get it to the range for some live fire. Thanks guys! |
