Took the new locking bushing model conversion to the range today.
Not a great day. Windy, cold, and some kid that "could drop a man at 1000 yards" was talking the whole time I was trying to shoot.

I took 3 carbines, all chambered in 5.56
1 was a 1/9 11.5".
1 was a 1/8 7.5"
1 was a 1/12 16"

While this isn't the ideal comaprison, it's what I had to work with.
The 1/9 I didn't even keep a target on. About 1.5" at 25 yards with both conversions.

The 1/8 7.5":
Groups were fairly tight. About 1" at 25 yards.

1/12 16" barrel

There was a slight difference in grouping being in favor of the newer style kit with the brass locking lug. I believe this is due to the kit being locked in place and unable to shift.
But to me, the rifle felt different. It's hard to describe but just felt more solid with the locking conversion. It felt like a low powered 5.56 rifle.
You would have to feel the difference to understand.
Testing didn't go as I wanted. I somehow busted the follower in my 15 round mag, the $15 box of Eley have 1/4 of the rounds not ignite, and my annoying little friend.
But I do like the new locking lug conversion.
Good accuracy for a conversion!

I had every intention of testing this conversion in my 20" A1 tonight. A family emergency has
the range trip on hold for atleast a few days... I'm really glad that shadowcop could fill in the
blank. I'll have a range report here soon, I hope. Short of any further complications..

Nice groups for a conversion. Thanks for the report.

I have never had good luck with Eley either, I use to shoot 22 bullseye league w/ my browning buckmark.
Tried the Eley target once, ended up with 2-3 failure to fires per (5/10 shot) leg the one night I tried it (if I'm remembering it correctly this was a few years back.. like 12... )
Most .22 LR semi auto firearms tend to be somewhat picky to what ammo they will make go bang consistently IMO

Now back to the real topic, with the 1/8 barrel what is causing the groups to be so large, is it the .223 barrel diameter or the twist rate?
Currently I'm debating between a dedicated upper or a drop in kit (my 5.56 upper is a RRA 1/8 16" SS heavy)
Unless I go the get both route then it will be figuring out which to get first.

Two issue contributed to the 1/8 being larger.
1- I was using open sights -The 16" 1/12 Had a 4 x scope
2-It was a 7.5" barrel so the sight radius was short.

I had intended to put the 4 x on the 7.5" and I'm sure groups would have been tighter.
Just a crappy day at the range all the way around, so I left without getting done what I intended.

The 11.5" 1/9 twist also had open sights. A2 upper receiver.

I know it wasn't a good comparison but it's what I had to work with.

Strange you guys are having problems with ely.

I coach Jr rifle teams and see tens of thousands of rounds of it fired plus I compete myself.  Can't remember ever seeing a round of ely that didn't go bang if well struck.

Of course that is all in bolt action Target rifles, not semi autos.

Eley has worked fine for me too but as you mentioned these are
semi auto and I'm sure that some will not function with it as well as
bolt or revolvers...

I've never had trouble with Eley either. It's my go to for accuracy. I just think I got a bad box.

my same pistol that would ftf with the ely also grouped the best with rem thunderbolts... so YMMV
22 semis are funny like that IMO

My Mother has been living here with my Wife and I for a little over 2 years. She had a Bleeding
Stroke last Saturday and is somewhat recovering at 95 YO.  She's good one day and not the next.
Thanks to everyone for the well wishes..

I was able to make it to the range tonight. I shot an Oly Lower built with DPMS Parts and a Colt A1 Upper.
It's a piece of art,,, The Upper... You couldn't tell, seeing how I'm struggling on my game computer still. The
pictures leave a lot to be desired as processed here...

I wanted to keep this equal in that I didn't use open sights like Brother North, I put a cheapo red dot
scope on. No Magnification. Open sights would have been much easier on me...

The Red Dot covered the entire center I was shooting at on the targets
with 5 centers.
I had to do a lot of guessing when I was shooting, it was impossible to aim any better with
this optic....

This CMMG Conversion is one of the best I've ever used. Being locked in place truly does give a different feel. For one
thing there's no twang from the buffer spring. Everything has a very positive feel. It's Nice.. The conversion and BHO
worked perfectly. Didn't fail one single time with any of the ammo. 1 Federal Round was a total dud. The Forward assist
did not work with my upper. It's one that just sets between the bolt and the rails... Not sure it was even suposed to be
there but I put it in...

1, Picture of the rifle and the lane I was in..

2. My target at 25 yards.

3. Bolt being held back after the first mag, Federal Bulk..

4. Magazine removed and bolt still held back.

5. Top 2 groups with Federal Bulk. Federal is what I'd used to zero the scope, then no changes were
made for the other ammo, where it hit is where it's shown... Center group was Wolf MT. Bottom 2
groups are with Eley Match EPS... The 2 right hand groups, Federal and Eley are Nickel sized...
Remember,

6. Top and center groups are Eley Match EPS. Bottom 2 groups are CCI Green Tag. Top left, center
and bottom left groups are dime sized. Lower right is nickel sized and upper right is quarter size...

7. Shoot-N-See center is quarter sized except for the 1 flyer... The Red Dot was almost as big as
this Shoot-N-See at 25 yards...15 shot group, rapid fire, CCI Green Tag...

It does well for a conversion.I was very pleased. I've got to put a scope on the 1/8 next time out.
Hang in there Dave.

I kept this to a test that would be similar to the ones you were doing. I honestly think
this rifle would Kick Butt using this locking lug conversion, if I were to put a scope on it.
That would allow me to actually see the target.. Almost all my shooting with the Red
Dot was guess work... I feel this conversion makes for a more accurate setup. It works
amazingly well with the BHOA too...I really like this whole idea.... For a conversion, I'd
give mine 100% for satisfaction factor...

Scope definetly helps. That is the same problem I have trying to shoot precision with open sites.
Back in the day I could do it but eyesight isn't what it used to be.

I did the clean up on the rifle today. The parts are a little more intricate so
it did take a little longer. I don't have a problem with that difference. I didn't
think I'd ever get excited about a conversion rifle again. After so many of
the fine dedicated uppers I've shot. This one has certainly peaked a new interest
to really put this to the test. I think it may be as accurate as many of the entry
level dedicated uppers... That's nothing short of amazing. CMMG really has a
winner as far as I'm concerned. It'll be very interesting to see what the other twist
rates can do with this installed. The 1:12" twist does great...
It'll do even better when I can see what I'm aiming at.....

My 1/12 shot just a little less than the dedicated. But I had wind gust to 25 mph. I'm sure that affected it as well.

I'm trying to come up with an optic appropriate on an A1 that will give it a real chance to shine.
That's a tall order, I may just have to plop a big clunky scope on it.. Oh well, who cares what
it looks like. It's just for testing, right?
