| I bought a RRA 9mm upper complete with two 40rnd UZI mags on an impulse at the gunshow this weekend for $400, thinking it would be fun to use at local USPSA/IDPA style carbine matches. I took it out to the range to test it out and sight it in, ran a 100rnd box of Winchester White Box through it, and decided to find another ammo for it, as the smoke was reminisent of a volly by reinactors firing muzzle loaders on veterans day. That aside, I decided the firing characteristics wherent anything like I'd hoped, It was just as much bounce and recoil as my .223 upper, and a lot more smoke, but it ran the box of ammo without a hitch, and was reasonably accurate grouping about an inch and a half at 30 yards with iron sights. So I don't feel the $400 was completely wasted. I policed up a 5galon bucket of 9mm brass, took it home and polished it, I have a 9mm conversion set up for my 550b, even though, I don't currently own a 9mm pistol. So I'll still need to buy some 9mm lead, before I can load any. Question is......Now what? I know I should give it more of a chance, It works ok, but I think I still prefer my .223 upper to shoot in the carbine matches. I figure I might as well shoot it some more, before I decide what to do with it, but it's my only 9mm at the moment, so I'd be loading this calibre exclusively for it. I'm thinking I' might eventually trade it towars a 7.62 X 39 upper that I could use to to hunt pigs and small dear with locally. Thoughts? Suggestions? |

I guess that depends on what you need it to do. I think if I bought a 9mm upper that works flawlessly for $400 I'd be pretty happy. They're relatively cheap to shoot, even cheaper if you reload, and 9mm brass and bullets are plentiful. Sounds like a fun plinker to me. You could SBR and compensate it and have an even more fun plinker and a home defense gun. If you really don't want it, I'm guessing you could sell it for a profit and buy what you want. (I know - I'm really not much help am I?) |
| Guess you're right, I'm guessing $400 was a decent price, it functions, and does have potential as a casual plinker. I'm not sure what SBR and comp means, just a wild guess is Short Barreled Rifle and Compensator? Actually I think that's been done already, it has a lightweight profile barrel, with a compensator permanently affixed that looks like the ones that used to be on an M-60 machine gun, and with the compensator it's the equivilent length of a 16" carbine. If the long compensator where sawed off, and the bore re-crowned, the barrel would be too short to be legal. I think I was originally hoping it would shoot more like the ,45 Marlin Camp Carbine I regret trading, and I could use it in our local carbine matches. However, it shoots more like what it actually is, an AR15, wich is fine I guess, and I could still use it, but their would be no advantage to it, and the mag changes would probably be slower compared to my .223 upper. Guess I might as well shoot it some more while I have it. Maybe I'll find some redeeming quality I like, If not, I can always trade it off toward something else, maybe a decent optic. |

If you've never fired one, a 9mm AR kicks more than you probably think it should. The round doesn't kick much, but you feel a harder kick due to the heavy bolt cycling.
I forget the exact details, but I think a member posted something in this forum about a 9mm upper he used for subgun matches on a registered full-auto lower. Best I can remember, he got rid of some of the recoil by using a pneumatic buffer and reloads that were a bit on the light side. Maybe somebody else remembers the details better than I do? |

A 9mm that works perfectly for $400? Wow! There are a load of people who would be thrilled to find that deal!
They do give a sharp recoil pulse, different than a .223 for sure. Guess I am just use to it. It reminds me I am NOT shooting my .33. I reload and enjoy the fact that 9mm is just a bunch easier and faster to load. I still like my .223's but end up shooting the 9mm more....I have two of them. |
