Can the trigger be upgraded in the SW M&P15-22? In other words, be replaced with a "real" AR trigger?

I believe it can.  But before you spend too much more money on it...... I paid $449 for my plastic (actually fiber glass-filled resin) MP15-22. A year later, I just paid $549 for a complete CMMG real mil-spec aluminum AR-15 dedicated .22LR rifle.

Bill Springfield does these, send the hammer and sear, and tell him it's a 15-22, rather than centerfire.

The M&P15-22 uses a standard AR15 trigger group.  The Rock River two stage is wonderful here, as it is in the full caliber rifles.  But it's $120 so before ordering another one I tried a couple less expensive things:

1.  The "10 minute AR15 trigger job" or similar works very well.  Cut one leg off the hammer spring and reform the trigger spring legs.  Most of the 10 minutes is getting the parts out and back in.  Costs nothing but your time.  There are sear polishing instructions as part of this too.

2.  The JP "yellow spring" set does the same thing.  I've done both and they're about the same and much lighter than stock.  Since the JP kit was last those springs are still in there.

Save yourself a lot of trouble reassembling the trigger and disconnector by cutting a spare hammer/trigger pin to length and use as a slave pin.  One pin gets you a slave pin and one for your buddy.

This works for all M16/AR15 triggers.

I put the JP "yellow spring" set in my s&W.  Since then, I have put them in three other guns for friends.

As the others have mentioned, I would simply install a set of JP reduced power springs. The trigger and hammer springs are yellow in color. I purchased mine at Brownells for about $9.00.

Yes, I used original parts, but just swapped the springs.

Great suggestion!   I happen to have a set in my "stuff" drawer.
