ok, so after doing some reading, it seems the conversions can foul the gas tube, and then to clean it you run .223/5.56 through, blowing the gunk onto the bolt carrier (no big deal to clean).  I don't like this because indoor ranges around here don't allow centerfire rifle cartridges, so it'd be a while to clean out the tube.  my questions regarding this:

1) couldn't you just use an adjustable gas block like a switchblock to cut flow into the gas tube?
2) is there anyway to clean this stuff out without a live round?  (compressed air, etc?)
3) are dedicated uppers actually worth the cost?

The best way to go is a quality dedicated upper of your choice. They are just that good
and that accurate. Then you never have to worry about fouling in your gas tube. It's never
been a problem for me but maybe I'm lucky. Oh, I use mainly copper washed bullets in
my conversions. Most bulk ammo is copper washed. Never use Remington Golden Bullets
in anything unless you get the Nordic Components Upper. CMMG Upper is $349.XX....

Good Luck,

1. It will still get into the Gas Block

2. I used to use canned air once in a while. Don't think it was really necessary.

3. Yes, very much so......

thanks!  i'll probably just save up for a cmmg or nordic upper in that case

I had one of my uppers get clogged up after shooting a lot (couple thousand at least) Lead Aquila Target through the conversion kit.

I've never had any problem with the copper plated bullets clogging up the gas tube.
