I took advantage or got taken advantage of the year end sale at BLack Dog and bought a Spikes Tactical 22 upper. $500. My question - Is the barrel a Lothar Walther? What is the twist rate of it? Is the bolt and carrier stainless steel? The hand gaurds feel fatter then normal. What brand hand gaurd do they go with?
I am very pleased with the quaility of the kit. Spikes used a M4 upper which probably over kill. Don't need the ramps or the bolt assist, maybe even the shell deflector. It has a heavy barrel contour under the grips and the M4 grenade launcher grooves in the front of it. The barrel is set back in to the reciever 1 1/2" so the the upper has the 14.5" look while keeping the flash suppressor removable. Way cool... I will post pictures as soon as I can... |

The internet is a great resource. Even better is the Spike's Tactical web site.
If the order from Black Dog did not say a Lothar Walther barrel, then it most likely is not. It is, after all, a $100 upgrade to get the Walther barrel. The site says that it has a 1/16-inch twist. Reading further on the manufacturer's web site, the "bolt and carrier" are electroless nickel. And the handguards are M4-style, which has a wider girth and different feel. It's on a .22, though, so who cares who makes them. If you really need to know, why don't you send an e-mail to Spike's for cripes sakes –– [email protected]. Seriously, don't ask other people to do your homework for you.

| I did not even think about looking at the Spikes websight until after I posted the topic. I plan on getting rid of the M4 handgaurds and would like to know they are. Sure, I could have looked it up but it would have not given you anything to write about. Did you look it up or did you know it? This is just a friendly forum talking about my new upper I got. That is all. Hopefully this will give insight to others looking at the Spike's 22 Uppers. |

It's a Green Mountain Barrel. Stupid on my part, I didn't even realize that Black Dog had these as part of their sale.
I thought they were out of stock. The upper is just like the one I built from parts for testing in the sticky last year. It's not quite as accurate as the Lothar Walther M4 but it's no slouch. If you'll try some different ammo's in it you'll find what it likes and is most accurate with. I'd run 500 or 1000 rounds of Federal or Winchester 333 Bulk to break it in and get the bugs out first. Save the more expensive ammo's for when you want to impress yourself and others. 5 shot group capability @25 yards should be nickel size range or smaller with a good quality ammo. Good Luck and be Happy, You got it for a great price.... SpecOps-13 |

SpecOps-13 i was shooting quarter size stickers at 25 yards with mine with a detachable carry handle for rear sight. 2 clicks up and dead on. now i only put 200-300 rounds through it and havent touched it in almost a year now. |

the "bolt and carrier" are electroless nickel. The bolt and rails are 4140 steel which has been electroless nickle plated to make it really slick and easy to clean. Where did that info come from. The metal is easily bent and seems soft. 4140 steel? |

It is a bit soft though - prone to peening on the rear of the bolt around the firing pin - so my guess is that it hasn't been heat treated beyond the 'prehard' state it was received from the supplier. |
