Hey, I am new to the forum, but I am a big fan.  I am in need of some help.  I have been trying to decide which is the best 9mm mag block for my conversion.  Top loading or bottom loading?  Which brand?  Pros and cons? Any info any one can give me would be appriciated.  Thank you

If you're dedicating the lower to a specific caliber, go with the Hahn dedicated block.

Or, go with the std. top load Hahn and use a 9mm bolt catch - same end result, but fewer moving parts.  If you buy right, you may end up $10-30 cheaper than the dedicated block.

Thanks guys.  That helps.  I will probably go with the top loading.  Any one else have any tips?

The std. top load blocks do not have actuators and are cheaper than their dedicated top load brethren.  Since RRA started offering long finger 9mm specific bolt catches for about $10, it can be cheaper to source the std. top loader plus a 9mm bolt catch for less than you can buy the dedicated block for.  However, there are cheaper options on non-Hahn blocks - RRA bottom loader from ADCO or the Spikes bottom loader from Spikes are both good deals that come to mind.

I have a top loader with a RRA catch, works really nice with metalform and old colt mags.

Wow, everybody, thank you.  Maybe a better question would be which ones to avoid? They all seem to be about equal quality, the exception being the plastic c-products version, which seems a little sketchy to me.  But I don't know- which is why I am asking.

The best thing to do is decide what your obejctive is with your build and that will help you determine the best choice of blocks.

Bottom load are a must if you want quick change capabilities and LRBHO.
Std. top load are quick change, but you lose LRBHO.
Std. top load or dedicated top load can give you LRBHO, but require the bolt catch to be removed to install/remove the block.
If you want to use unmodified Uzi mags, you are limited to the VMHytech block.
If you are super cheap and don't mind a challenge, the CP block may be a viable option - I've seen them as low as about $70.

That is just the Colt style stuff - you also have the Oly stuff and the dedicated lowers for Colt/modded Uzi mags and Glock mags, some of which can work with both Colt style and Oly uppers.

I've been using the VMHytech one for several years with no issues at all.

Great, thank you.  Looks like a Hahn top loder it is.  I might want to change cal. but not on the fly, plus the LRBHO is not super important for me.    I am planning on only running a Colt pattern system (I probably should have mentioned that in the first post).  I am sure I will have more questions in the future.  Thank you AR15.com community for the support.
