My Spikes Tactical .22 upper has been awesome. Its fun and cheap to shoot. I teach a junior sportsmans firearms program at my club. After mastering the basics the older kids get to shoot the Spikes Upper. All of them KNOW what the black rifle is as they have seen images of our soldiers on TV. The kids just love shooting the thing. Good investment, makes me smile every time I pull it out of the safe. I have an aintpoint clone on mine. But at some point it will wear a magnified optic.

best regards,

Luis Leon

They pay for themselves in ammo savings...it is a no brainer in my opinion.

Is the Spike's upper  a freestanding device with its own bolt and chamber, or does it use some sort of conversion (aka a Ceiner kit) to actually handle the cartridges?
Thnx,

its a dedicated barrel and chamber and a dedicated bolt assembly...

As 1000Z says, the barrel is a proper .22LR , 15" or 16" twist barrel with an actual .22LR chamber.
The bolt is a refinement of the Atchisson design, electroless nickel plated for lubricity, and bored for a ball detent for use with M-16 lowers.
The chamber insert of an Atchisson conversion is replaced with a collar which mates the BCG with a Kuehl style dedicated .22 barrel.
They use Atchisson compatible mags such as MAC/Atchisson, BroCal/Atchisson, or Black Dog Machine/Atchisson mags.

I convinced myself my two daughters needed an AR to learn on so a .22 was the way to start them.  I even painted a set of furniture pink for them.  It will stay black for a few years until they are old enough to learn how to shoot.

Hey...my wife bought into the story?!?

I am in the market for one.  Can anyone report on how well they work with M16?  IE. Full Auto.?  Thanks.

With auto trip, anti bounce weight and ball detent, ought to run great, my dealer's Ciener does. Some spring tuning may well be needed.

Those are the parts required to make a .22 ceiner work in a full auto m16/ar15, otherwide the kits are setup for standard semi auto fire only. Spike, cmmg, and ceiner all sell those parts for their kits, check their web pages.

Only Spike's is machined for the ball detent, which helps combat bolt bounce, which can contribute to FTFs and OOB discharges.
The other parts come in a Spikes or Ciener kit speced for full auto use.

Just this last weekend I took mine out (ordered it when overseas, had it sitting in a box with a spikes 5.56 upper as well). in 2 days fired 780 22lr and only had 3 FTE. The faiure to eject was weird. It occured due to not firing. However the extractor could not grab the shell rim. Pulled the trigger again and it went off. The 2nd day I took it out I took it to a indoor range. Got alot of looks, passed it around. Everyone enjoyed it.
Before sights were installed.

A good photo to show the lenght differnce due to the chamber being inside the receiver making the barrel "appear" short so be it still 16"

Firearms taken out that weekend. The Larue FTS 3X mag was borrowed from another gun. The carry handle will probally stay on the 22lr upper.

Range bag taken out.... notice the 22lr mags on the right. Had 11 in there

Today I finished my 4th bick (2200rds) and have 2 FTE's that I fully attribute to the Bulf Fed ammo. I have not yet cleaned this upper but I may do so tomorrow.
