I have the Spikes tactical one that I just got a few days ago. It is based on a modified Ceiner and sells for the same price, I have bought a few things from Spikes and have heard good things about their customer service, though I have never needed it myself.

I took it to the range the other day and was pleased with its overall performance. I ran several mags through it with maybe 2 failures using Federal bulk pack on a new kit. One was a loose FTE and one required prying a case out of the bolt with a screwdriver. I was using an 11 inch barrell with a 5.5 flashider and would keep all the rounds on half of an 8.5X11 inch target at 50 yards.

Cost effective? You decide....223 ammo $.50 a round, .22 $.023 a round so how long does it take to pay off the $199 adaptor?

Maybe you meant to post one forum up from this one, like in the rimfire forum?

I have a Ciener kit. It was about the only game around when I bought it, but if I had it to do over today, I would buy the Spike's conversion. Spike's has Ciener beat in every possible category, for about the same price.

When I was considering a .22 kit, I made a spreadsheet to figure out where I would break even on the cost of the kit compared to the cost of ammo. But now that I have the kit I feel like the intangible benefits outweigh simple cost comparison.

Excessive crap in the gas tube, wrong twist in the barrel and chance of damaging a 1/7 5.56 = FAIL

A proper Spikes .22 upper with correct twist = accuracy and savings.  My upper paid for itself after 3 months.

That's doing it right.

Kits dool, Uppers rule!

I'm currently running 6 Ciener's, have 20,000+ Rounds through one of them. Still shoots 150 round groups of 1 1/2" at 25 yards in a 1 in 12" twist barrel. I just wrote Tom at Spikes about their Dedicated Barrel and Bolt. Time to compare.
Ciener's work fine for what they are. Never had a problem with fouling using Federal Bulk. Did 10,000 rounds in one rifle with no .223 and just normal cleaning. NO Problemo.

SO-13

PS: I've paid for most of my rifles with ammo savings using 22's most of the time. Now over $16,000.

I've got a Ciener kit.

Picked it up a couple of months ago when Midway had them in stock for $139 with a 10 round mag.  Have since picked up 26 round mags from Black Dog and CMMG.

Are they worth it - Hell  Yes! the kit paid for itself before I finished a brick of .22LR ammo.

Are they accurate?  accurate enough

+1, I was going to ask the same question.
These are a lot of great responses, thanks everyone. made my decision easier.

I hate to even mention a barrel twist... because I know what that usually leads to.  But I CAN say this:

I shoot a ceiner outa my 1/9 Hbar Colt with pretty reasonable accruacy, and 1500+ rounds with 0 barrel or gas tube fowling(although I do run a few .223 after ever couple hundred just to be safe, and then clean the shit out of it).  Its accurate enough that my friends and I practice shooting bottle caps at about 10-15 yards(and hitting them regularly) and can hit bottles at 100 with the right elevation.  I have not shot a 1/7 or 1/12 so I can't speak to what you will experience with these

As someone else has already said, If I could do it all again, I would prolly buy the spikes if nothing else for the sweet finish.... but their customer service is amazing.  If you stick with the rimfire forum you will see it in action, he is a regular(the same can be said about cmmg minus the bling).

The best advice I can give you.... DO NOT use golden bullets.... I don't even use remmington period for the fear that golden bullet dust may have worked its way onto a few of the rounds.

There are some tune-ups people have done(and posted), and they say they can get the golden bullets to feed..... I've tried these techniques to a certain extent with minimal success.  Just avoid it all together, I heard it makes the baby jesus cry anyways.

I say +1 for spikes. +99billion for the conversion as a whole.

The 419th round of .22lr shot is the break even point.
Round number 420 you are "making money"........... so to speak.

And if you picked your kit up for $139 from Midway the break even point is 291 rounds.  That's not even 6 boxes of .22LR or a little over half of a 550 value pack from Walmart.

Oh and if no one has mentioned it yet,  Cieners customer service is non-existant.  If you have to buy one order it from Midway for a chance at some customer service.  Spikes and CMMG make almost identical kits.  Both have much better customer service reputations.

I've had  a Ciener kit for over 10 years. It has always run 100% with Federal bulk pack from Wallyworld. In my Bushmaster with 1/9 barrel accuracy is acceptable out to about 50 yards. In my Colt with 1/7 barrel accuracy is pretty crappy... some say minute of beer can @25 yards. I've been shooting it so much lately because of the damn ammo crisis that I've decided to upgrade and get a dedicated upper. If you just want to blast at cans and such, it will be all you need. If you like to punch paper and get small groups, get a dedicated upper.

I have a Ciener kit installed in a DPMS 16" upper/Spike's lower.  2" @ 25 yards, 4" or less @ 100 yards.  Bought it solely due to cheap sale price offered by Midway.  Required reshaping/polishing the bottom of the bolt and the rear plate to get it to run right, and on a Colt lower, reducing the height of the bolt stop.  Works well with several different types of ammo, including <gasp!> Remington Golden Bullets, which seems to be a bit unusual considering other posts.  The only "internal" mod was polishing the feed ramp and breaking the sharp edge of the chamber.

Had a Spike's dedicated upper, liked it, it functioned well, just wasn't enough accuracy advantage to justify keeping it.

You guys can send all the Rem GB to me... I'll use 'em up for you.

If you have multiple ar's a conversion gives you more flexiblity than a dedicated upper. IMO it's the best choice for plinking if you're wanting super tight groups I'd suggest a upper or a completely different rifle.
Oh and for plinking 12ga shells at 40yd is a blast.
