Sold a NIB DPMS .22 rimfire upper to a friend. After about 100 rounds he has begun to have frequent failures to feed, failure to extract, etc. I suggested he clean the devil out of it, brass brush out any possible combustion/lead ring in the chamber, lube it up, and try again.

Any suggestions beyond that? He noticed DPMS has halted production of same pending re-engineering. Any comments on  that? Please, viable comments only, no hearsay or internet bs.

Afraid I cannot comment more accurately on the feeding/extracting issues beyond that. I suggested trying superior ammo, such as Win or Rem hi-vel,  to bulk pack. He tried some match ammo the other day, but that may be too low a velocity for proper function.

I off loaded the DPMS, which I had owned for five years and never fired, and am spending the money from it on a Beo upper.

My experience with the DPMS M-4 upper was excellent.

Very good accuracy, excellent function, with any ammo, RWS Target to MiniMags to Blazers.

A Ciener bolt CAN be adapted to work, but the DPMS unit works so well, the only reason to do so is for high cap mags, something BDM is working on.

Caliber Conversion Supply has done a small run of firing pins and extractors, so your friend should buy spares while they're available.

First thing I ask people whey they are having feeding problems with a semi auto .22 is have you cleaned it well.

Second thing is have you tried different ammo.

Third thing is have you tried a different magazine.

One of those 3 things will fix most semi auto rimfire problems.

1) Clean the chamber really well.
2) Avoid any waxed lead ammo - it gums the chamber up. Mine ran well with Walmart Federal Bulk Pack (with the copper colored bullet).

My DPMS M-4 upper took some breaking in with Mini-mags and has run fine since on Blazer ammo.  I'll be trying some Fed bulk pack soon.

The last time I spoke to DPMS about this was about six months ago.  The .22 uppers are pretty much on hold permanently as they are too busy making .223 and .308 rifles and uppers.

From the Black Dog Machine Website:  IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A MAGAZINE FOR THE DPMS OR THE COLT .22 KITS WE CURRENTLY DO NOT CARRY ANYTHING THAT WILL WORK WITH THEM.  We are working on a few solutions but nothing at this time and it will at least until the end of summer or longer.

Tell your friend to keep the chamber of his DPMS clean.  I believe DPMS recomended cleaning the chamber every 200 rounds.  One of the reason DPMS halted production was because of OOB firings.  When it fires OOB, the right hand extractor is usually launched into space.  I would definetly pick up the spare extractor / firing pin from CCS.

My DPMS fired OOB once (around the 6500 round count).  I lost the extractor, detent and spring, and had the bullet lodged halfway down the barrel.  DPMS serviced and repaired the upper for me - just cost me shipping to DPMS.  I do not know if they will service the uppers any more.

As Frog mentioned, you can convert a Ciener Kit to work with the DPMS upper.  I did that, and have had no problems at all.

Good luck!

Brad

Thanks for the great input-my guess was cleaning and break in....

Brad-who is "CCS" you mentioned in your post?

I have two DPMS dedicated uppers where I use RRA NM trigger groups.  Both of these rifles are very reliable with the right ammo.  I use CLP and be sure to put lube on the rods the recoil spring and bolt slide on.  My DPMS and other 22 conversion kits don't work very well with Remington or Winchester ammo.  I have had very good luck with Aguila 40 grain SE plated round nose.  This ammo is very accurate in my DPMS uppers.  I've also had good luck with CCI mini mags, Blazer LRN and Federal 550 bulk packs sold at Walmart.   When my rifle started having feeding issues I found the top of the barrel had been peened by repeated hits on an empty chamber.  Once I removed the obstruction from the chamber opening with a file my rifle started functioning again.  I normally clean by 22 AR's after each range trip.  I always wipe the bolt off, wipe out the upper/lower and depending on the number of rounds fired I'll run a bore snake through the barrel a couple of times.  I normally don't use solvent and a bore brush until the barrel has been to the range several times and has digested at least a 1000 rounds.  I figure my AP4 22 upper has close to 20,000 rounds through it and my 16" bull barrel about 1000 rounds.  Most 22 conversions I've been around require a few hundred rounds of break in.  My DPMS uppers with RRA triggers won't cycle 100 % with subsonic ammo and work best with high velocity ammo.
