I'm working on a build, and I want it to be very close to the original 10+" barrel SMG's configuration.  I "think" it had carbine-length round handguards, and a slick-side A1 upper, but were there any other specifics?  Did the original Colt SMG's upper have a gas tube hole?

Thanks for inputs.

R0635

10.5" bbl, carbine handguards, round handguard cap(no notches), improved delta ring, A1 upper (no gas tube hole), FSB went both ways in relation to the gas tube hole, A1 FH (1/2-36), A2 front sight post, new version of the extension tube lock ring and plastic 2 position stock.

Edit:
The above is referring to the original R0635.  The newer ones have the M4 buttstock and a 1 piece tension or 1 piece, 2 pin mag block.

the big question is what magwell block do you want?  The first were one piece friction fit, with a detent, then one pice with 2 roll pins, then finally the 2 piece, 3 pin version like is used now

Just a little backwards

1) 2 piece, 3 pins
2) 1 piece, tension screw
3) 1 piece, 2 pins

Does not exactly jive with what Ive experienced, but OK.

The Agency I used to work for started to replace their their Uzi's with the SMG in the late 80s/early 90's first delivery was as I stated, one pice block with the tension detent.  That  didnt work so well, you either had to keep it so loose that the block moved in the mag well, or you tightened it down to the point that you split the front of the magwell.  That lot of weapons was sent back to Colt, they drilled the 2 pin holes and sent them back, worked good.  There were a couple more purchases that came with the one piece 2 pin set up, then the last purchase had the 3 pin 2 piece block

Thanks for the info, folks.

As for the mag block, since some originals were not pinned, then the outward appearance wouldn't be affected if I used a Hahn or RRA block, so I don't have to decide that just yet.

I guess I should have asked this in my previous reply, but does anyone know where to get a slick-sided upper without a gas tube hole?

I should say the listing is Colt's order of evolution.  They shipped various stages of evolution at varoius times (hold overs, excess inventory, etc).

All originals are 2 piece, 3 pin.  In 2001 they went to the one peice tension (which sucked, as stated above) then they started using 2 pins in the 1 piece setup.

Edit:
I have a patent # but it's not correct.  I'll see if I can dig it up.

I would look on the EE.  They come up but very rarely.  Have you thought of a DOE style carbine?

This is a pre '94 with my sear installed.  Garrison Manufacturing is making the FSB, hand guard cap and hand guards.  Good luck with your project.

Same here.  I may wind up starting out with an A2 upper, but I'd prefer to make the rifle as close as possible to an "original style" Colt SMG.  NoDakSpud offers a slick side upper, but it has the gas tube hole...  I haven't found anything like an A1 upper without a gas tube hole.

Here is my clone.  I think the best way to build one is to just get a 6450, SBR it and then cut the barrel down.  It may not be 100% SMG (I wanted my barrel a little shorter and no fun switch), but it looks pretty close to the real thing.
