I picked up an Atchisson conversion kit at a local gun show for $40 with the magazine. I have a couple of questions:
1) Are the magazines compatible with the other 22lr magazines out there? Specifically the Ceiner conversions? 2) When the bolt recoils, it seems to go too far back and gets hung up on the hammer. It looks (from some light rust and wear) that inside the tube in the rear there might have been some kind of hard rubber buffer in the rear that kept the bolt from going too far back and getting hung on the hammer. I don't know how something like that would come in and out, there isn't much room there, but if you have one, can you check? When shooting it in single shot mode, it does a pretty good job of feeding, but I have to pull the rear pin between shots to allow the bolt to go forward again. |

This depends entire;y which Atchisson conversion you have.
If it's the tubular looking one from MAC, or maybe an early one from BroCal (Dayton, OH), now known as a MKI, only steel Ciener mags will work. BDMs can be modified to work, but so much material must be removed that I doubt the modified mags will work for long before breaking lips. The open design MKII is functionally identical to current Ciener units and will work with BDM mags as well as original Cieners. On re reading your post it's clear you have a MKI, so no BDMs, only Cieners will work. Disassemble the unit be spreading the side plates and removing the front chamber insert piece. The bolt and spring will come out and you can dig out the deteriorated buffer pad. Whittle a piece of rubber or urethane and glue it into the back of the unit. IIRC it needs to be 3/4" thick or so. Without this buffer piece, the bolt will indeed go too far back and get caught by the hammer. |

What, nobody is going to piss and moan about him getting a conversion kit for $40. Even if it needs a little TLC, he got a great deal. To the OP, congrats you got a great deal! That was actually the first thing I saw, but I didn't want to be the one to open up the can o' "bitch and moan."

Frog, thanks for the details. It is certainly a MAC unit. Made in Georgia.
I figured that there was some kind of buffer in the back by the different, slightly rusty finish having a distinct dividing line, but couldn't figure out how it went in there. Once you pointed out how it spread apart and then came apart I got it figured out. Ill turn something out in the workshop that should work well. It looks like a small screw will hold the buffer in from the rear. I need to find some suitable buffer material. Now to troll for an extra magazine. I won't waste my money on BDMs. I also need a new hammer because I ground the notch off of mine to keep it from catching and now it won't strike the firing pin reliably. And for the rest of you who were thinking of griefing about what I spent, to you I say "Nany nany boo boo." Respectfully, of course. And Ill make sure not to mention the pair of sequentially numbered (but quite rusty) S&W 10 shot revolvers from the 1920s that I got for $100. Chubber Quoted:
