im a poor college student now but i still got to shoot. i want to get a 22 conversion for my armalite, but i dont know which one to get. it needs to be easy to swap between .22lr and 5.56. also, does shooting 22 throught my barrel have any ill effects on the barrel? thanks     adam

I was thinking along the same lines as you. I couldn't afford to spend the money on a dedicated upper so bought a CMMG conversion kit from Brownells.

It works fine for plinking at short distances. Just keep it well oiled and be patient during the break in period.

There are at least five different formats out there, none of which are interchangeable with the others:

Colt/DPMS

CV-22

USAF

M261 (USGI or Olympic's clone)

Atchisson, Ceiner, CMMG, Spikes, and maybe others.

Only the last two are still in production.

I have both M261 and a Ceiner, but if I were starting over today, I'd get a Spikes kit.  Just looks like better construction from behind the keyboard.

BTW, go to the Rimfire and Pistol Calibers Forum and look around.  Lots of good info.

FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

also, what rounds do you run through it? do i have to start with hotter loads like CCI stingers, or can i just go right to federal bulk packs? thanks   adam

Spikes say they test their kits with fed bulk packs I believe. I haven't gotten a chance to get mine out yet, but if that's what they use to test them, I figure then it would be ok to use them.

I just received a Ciener kit.  Not because I thought they were the best, but I figured they would be OK.

Midway had some in stock ( for a couple of hours) last week.  I placed my order Thursday night at 10:53 PM, conversion kit arrived in the mail yesterday.

Use the Federal bulk pack with the spikes.

Do NOT use any lead tipped .22 as it will lead foul the feed ramps and then it will fail to chamber.
The federal bulk packs are copper tipped.

I just got the Ceiner kits I ordered from Midway.  They look great.  Also have a Spikes on the way.  Now to the range and test them out.

Lead tips are no more fouling than copper washed/wax sealed rounds. They both make a mess of the chamber face and feed ramp. Use what works on your setup.

I have shot more lead bullets thru my AR's than most people on this board have shot in their entire life thru any weapon. It is not an issue what so ever. I favor Federal Automatch which is 100% lead. .22lr is dirty so you have to clean your rifle a bit more than any centerfire round but at .03, clean away.

I just got the Ciener kit myself. I'm going to have a dedicated upper for 22, but it will be the conversion , I just won't be swapping it out to shoot .223. Should I oil the .22 bolt up before I put it in or should it be run dry or what? I read somewhere don't run them wet, so I wanna be sure.

Steve,
I polished my Cieners kit with rubbing compound and a Dremel. I put a SMALL drop of oil on the rails of the kit and blast away. Do not soak it with oil. 22's are dirty by nature and a wet conversion kit rapidly becomes a gummed up mess.

SPIKES

I went with Spikes because of the great customer service I see from Tom on the forums here.

I had to run my Cieners wet when new or they would not run a full mag on FA (SA was fine dry when new). After 1000 or so rounds no lube is needed  anymore as the kits polished themselves. Lube in .22 makes a hell of a mess.

I just got my spikes this week. Since I knew the range would be a few days away I spent most of my time polishing it. I won't repeat my wife's comment about all the rubbing.....

Seriously Spike's conversion is a thing of beauty. Why buy something else and spend a lot of time on it when you can get it right out of the box (or tube) that way. I won't even go into the customer service differences.

Well I took my 22 upper with the Cieners kit in it today and ran about 300 rds through it. RAN FLAWLESSLY the whole day! I am impressed by the groupings as well. At 25 yards, iron sights I can group 2" offhand easily. I was a little concerned about the accuracy, but it seems to be as good as I am after , at least for now.

I had the SAME exact experience today.

I shot both CCI minimags (expensive) and federal champion 525 bulk pack(cheap) and everything ran flawlessly.

I to was please with the accuracy and  expected worst but 25-50 yards was spot on with my irons.

So pleased I went out and bought 6 boxes of the 525 federal bulk pack.

God it feels good to actually be able to buy ammo in large amounts and blow through it again, it's like 2000-2001 all over again.
