Question on sighting in range for 22 cal standard velocity.  I shoot at my backyard 22 silhouette range(if unfamiliar, targets at 40,60,78, and 100 yards). I want to sight in a scope for minimum holdover/under at these ranges.  Should I sight in at 50 yards(halfway from 0 to 100), or at 70 yards(halfway between actual shooting ranges)?
Thanks, jerry

OST for replies.

OP:  what ammo and platform are you using?

There is no free ride here when it comes to an AR with 22 LR because the carry handle/scope is at least 1.5 inches above the bore.  You have to make a compromises.  When my Dept issues carbine/rifles they use 100 yard sight in/zero.   Most police shootings are at closer distances but at 25 yards the round is going to hit 1.5 to 2 inches low, real close at 50 and dead on at 100 yards.  Usually I'm a couple of inches low at 200 yards and about 6 to 8 inches low at 300.  With my 22's I sight them in at 50 yards.  I'm still about 1.5-2 inches low at 25, dead on at 50 and 4 to 6 inches low at 100.  The hold over is very easy for me shooting steel targets at 100 yards.  I can usually aim at the top of the plate and hit it every time.  I have a mil dot scope I sometimes use with the 22 and 1 mil high is pretty close to dead on when shooting at 100 yards for me.  If I aim 1 mil high the group is at least  on the paper to test for accuracy.   If I'm using my 2.5 to 10 power scope (standard crosshair) I usually mark my target at the top of a 9" paper plate.  If I aim dead on at 100 yards my high velocity rounds will almost always be in the mid to bottom of the plate so I can measure the group.  I almost always shoot HV ammo and I feel sure target ammo will shoot just a little lower still.   I've never sighted a 22 AR in at 100 yards but I'd think you'd be high at 25 and 50 yards.  I know with the 50 yard zero I have no trouble hitting a steel plate the shape of a bowling pin out to 135 yards.  This is the longest distance we can shoot at any of our steel plates.  Your experience might prove different than mine.  I get a lot of enjoyment out of testing and seeing what works and doesn't work.

I think mid range trajectory of a 22lr standard velocity round sighted in for a 100 yd zero is 5.5 inches . if you are shooting 1/5th scale  nra silohuettes that 40 yd chicken is a bitch. are you using a scope ? if so you could get a fowler pride scope since you know your range it has marks in 25 yd increments from 50 yds out to around 200yds I think. or you could use a scope with adjustable target turrets  post targets at the ranges you desire to shoot and mark the turrets for adjustment to the different range or use a mil-dot scope .

Thanks to the replies.
Did a little searching, found Norma Precision (the ammo people) and they have an awesome ballistics calculator. Can play with variables and see results graphed, can enter own ammo or use the commercial canned entries, vary zero range, add w/v. For my question, sighting in at 75 yards has least amount of holdover/under vs 50 yards. I had to search other sites to find BC for 22 rimfire, but that's another topic!
Thanks, Jerry
