How easy is it to remove the mag insert of a 9mm lower?  I want a 223 upper I have.

Some brand names would help here as there are numerous different styles of magwell blocks / adapters for 9mm.

Some are pinned in, some are held in with various configurations of tension devices, some go in from the top and have the bolt hold open over the top.

Mine's whatever Spike's tactical use - i'm guessing it's RRA.

I'm not familiar with what Spike's is using.

If it came from Spike's it might be RRA mag block. Lock at the bottom of the block for a setscrew hole. Use the correct size Allen wrench to loosen the set screw. Then you should be able to remove the block. You will also have to hold in the mag release while pushing the block out the bottom of the mag well.

OK I'm with you....so as it's held by the mag catch it should be relatively easy to reinstall?

Yep.  That's a 1/8" allen screw.  DO NOT unscrew it completely, only until the block is no longer solidly held.  Then just press the magazine release button and slide the block out.  Reinstalling it is the reverse.  When you put it back in, don't let it go higher than the magazine catch holds it; this helps maintain reliability with a variety of magazines, plus it tells you that you got it in right.

It is a RRA magwell block and its installed from the bottom. Just loosen the 1/8 allen screw until you can feel that the block is loose then hit the mag release button it should drop free from the bottom.
