I have a M261 kit that needs a home.  I'm looking to build something that will mostly be used for 22LR.  I'm thinking of going with a 1X9 chromoly barrel.  Any thoughts?  Will this be a pain to clean?  I'm not looking for a tack driver, just something to get extra range time with.

I do have a stripped 1x12 20" A1 barrel that I have considered sending off to be shortened to 16".

Thanks!

You should get better accuracy with a 1:12 barrel, but the only way to know is to try it.  On the other hand, you might be better off selling the A1 barrel and buying a .22 RF barrel from Spikes or M1Sales.  Original A1 barrels seem to bring a premium these days if they are in good condition.  By the time you pay to shorten the barrel you could probably buy a 22 rf barrel and get excellent accuracy too.

I never noticed that M1S had 1:16 barrels.  Too bad they're only for the Ciener kit.

I got an upper from Kurt's Kustom Firearms (KKF) in Florida a couple of years ago.  Kurt built the upper using a 1:16 twist barrel and uses a unique barrel extension.   You can see the design on his web site.  I had a couple of different conversion kits and I had Kurt build me an upper, I have been very satisfied.  The accuracy is on par with my dedicated DPMS Lo Pro 22.  When I bought the KKF upper there weren't any dedicated 22's on the market like there are now.   In the past Kurt has sold barrels  only or he can build you an you an upper to your spec.  I felt his price was reasonable however Kurt is a busy man and it may take you a little time to get an upper or barrel.  The 1:12 barrel would do really well as a dedicated 22 barrel if you don't mind the 20" length.  I wouldn't pay to have it shortened.  I seriously thought about buying a 20" 1:12 barrel to test to compare to the accuracy of my three 1:16 twist 22's.  I think in shear accuracy the 1:16 would be best but I think the 1:12 would be real close with the high velocity and bulk ammo.  Target ammo might make the most difference in the 1:16 twist.  From my experience 22 ammo is just not that consistent which hurts pure accuracy.  For plinking and CQB training the 1:12 would work as good as a 1:16 twist barrel IMHO.  You'd need a scoped rifle on a bench to tell the difference between a 1:12 and 1:16 barrels in accuracy with most ammo.

Like Vascar I also have a KKF barrel that shoots extremely well. I did build an upper also with a 1/12 barrel thinking that I could go back and forth between .22 and the light bullet .223 bulk packs. I bought all variations of the Eley .22 ammo remington is producing and took my A1 1/12 and A2 1/9 twist both with 14.7" bbls. So with irons one would shoot a little better with one type and the other with the other type. Really not that much difference. I hate to admit defeat but I wouldn't do the 1/12 project if I could do it over. The KKF barrel gives all the accuracy I need and for just plinking my 1/9 is good enough.
