I'd even buy one if it used a tube mag under the barrel. Of course right now all the makers are struggling just to make normal stuff so getting something new developed is probably out of the question.

I might be mistaken but I believe Spikes has them now.

Spikes had a few 17 Mach 2 barrels Tom said they could sell.  I think the post said they were 16" stainless steel barrels.  Biggest problem for building a 17 HMR is the heavier bolt needed and magazines.  Tom said he 22 mags will work with the Mach 2 and I think Tom built himself one.  Maybe he'll chime in and post some pics.

the 17 hmr has problems operating a semi-auto , there are several articles about out of battery discharges and erratic pressure. if you notice there are very few semi auto rifles remington only makes it in the bull barrel , and I think the others are semi custom design. I was thinking of adding a 17hmr to complement my remington 597 in 22 mag but after much research decided to just let sleeping dogs lay. maybe an upper chambered for 204 ruger might be fun.

A local master ar smith that builds my service rifles made some 17hmr dedicated uppers a few years back.  He doesn't do them anymore though, because he said it was a huge pain in the ass.  Everything was made by hand and required a lot of fitting to function reliably.  He said they were just too expensive that most people didn't want to pay for them.  He also used krieger barrels on them.

I've built a couple of Mach2's. Requires stronger springs and added bolt mass. There is also an issue with certain ammo's case thickness. CCI and Hornady would always bulge and rupture cases, Remington and Eley were OK.
I built one for a full-auto customer and it really required some extensive mods. During initial tests full-auto cycle rate would increase and by about the fourth or fifth round round the residual barrel pressures would cause early blowback and ruptured cases on all ammo. Blew some Blackdog mags right out of the lower ruining them.
Based on my experience with the Mach2, I would guess that HMR17 pressures exceed that which is generally safe for semi-auto blowback conversions. A gas operated locking bolt would be interesting.

I know alexander Arms had been working on a 17hmr conversion with an injection molded magazine. I do not know what ever happened to this project, if they have completed it and are working on a mag or if the whole plan was shelved.

I like my 17hmr bolt action, but think I would prefer a 22 magnum myself.....I assume if someone gets a 17 hmr in production, it would be easy to do a 22mag conversion.
